Stanningley street's shock and heartbreak as woman found dead in house

Residents living in Stanhall Mews have said they are "shocked" at the news of a murder investigation on their doorstep.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police have launched the investigation after the body of a woman was tragically found inside a house on the residential Stanningley street. Two people, a man and a woman, have already been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police and CSI officers have been at the scene conducting their enquiries today, with a large part of the area cordoned off. West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a number of its officers would also be conducting patrols in the local area today, to reassure other residents.

Those living in Stanhall Mews, which is a small residential street in Stanningley, have reacted with shock at the tragic news. One local said that they did not know anything had happened, until they saw police and CSI arrive.

The resident told LeedsLive: "All of a sudden all these police cars turned up yesterday and everyone wondered what on earth was going on. They didn’t tell us what had taken place and we only found out about it this morning."

Another local said that they and others were "shocked" at the sad news, but that they did not know the woman. They said: "Obviously, everyone is very shocked about what has happened to this poor woman. We don’t know very much about what has taken place as yet and it’s normally such a quiet little street.

"I only ever spoke to her once or twice about bin collections and I don’t think anyone round here knew her at all to be honest, not even her name. I know it’s a cliche but she kept herself to herself.

"The police were at the same house a week or two ago regarding a missing persons enquiry and I don’t know if what’s happened is connected to that in any way."

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said that officers discovered the body of the woman, who has not yet been formally identified, after responding to a concern for safety call yesterday afternoon. Officers received the call at 2.49pm yesterday (Friday, March 25) and the woman's body was found inside the house.

The spokesperson added: "A man and a woman, both 35, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody. A scene remains on at the address as enquiries into the woman’s death continue. These are being led by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.

"Local officers are conducting additional patrols of the area to provide reassurance to communities. Anyone with information that is likely to assist the investigation is asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team on 101, or by using the LiveChat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website."

The log reference is 1025 of 25 March.
