Stanford may or may not have had certain bettors in mind on a strange last-second field goal in its loss to California.
Down 27-17 with five seconds to go, Cardinal head coach David Shaw opted to trot out kicker Joshua Karty for a 61-yard field goal. Karty nailed the kick, the longest in Stanford history.
However, it amounted to largely nothing other than adding a really cool kick to Karty’s highlight video and pushing the total point spread of 46.5 to the over for the afternoon.
If you bet the under for the game, it was the kick of doom.

According to Action Network, 62 percent of the bets on the over/under and 67 percent of the money wagered backed the under 46.5.
Stanford’s inexplicable field goal was the kind of bad beat that bettors can’t prepare for in a game where a team is down by 10 points with five seconds to go.
It’s as brutal a last-second swing as you’ll see.
Naturally, the bizarre field goal got folks talking on Twitter.
@stanford_ad why did your coach kick a meaningless field goal with no time left, did you have the over? Did he? A big Alum? We really need a legitimate reason @NCAA

If David Shaw keeps his job, you’ll know a big Stanford alum bet the over

Stanford, down 10, kicks 61 yard FG at the buzzer to hit the over. Longest FG in school history. Lol. Gotta love CFB. And Cal got the cover with a TD with 58 seconds left

We might have one SVP Bad Beat tonight. Stanford down 10 makes a 60 yard FG to push the total over by .5 with 5 seconds left. Whyyyyyyy

Stanford kicked a 61-yard field goal down ten points with time expiring and covered the 46.5-point over. And people say there are no heroes anymore.

Stanford kicking a 61 yard FG at the gun down 10 to go Over 46 is big time woof.

Still laughing at the ending for the The Big Game. Stanford hits a 61 yard field goal as the clock expires. This shrinks the Cal lead to 27-20. This allegedly hits the over. It looks like Cal’s coach celebrates a made Stanford field goal 🤣 pic.twitter.com/Erjp7Mr9Z3

Stanford was losing by 10 to Cal as time was about to expire, so they trotted their kicker out there and he banged in a 61-yarder to go down 7 as time expired. Hey why not; let the young man cook

Stanford down 10 drills a 61-yd FG as time expires for the W̶I̶N̶ … uhh … I mean for the OVER 46! 😅😅😅

Stanford’s Josh Karty nails a 61-yd FG as time expires to stay perfect on FGs this season! Cal beats Stanford by 7 instead of 10.

Bro I just had the worst beat ever. Cal/Stanford under 46.5 – Stanford randomly kicks a 61 yd FG down 10 points on the last play to make the score 27-20 like WTF 🤬 #rigged

Stanford drills a meaningless 61-yard FG to kill the under against Cal. 😔
FINAL: 27-20

Cal were up 27-17. Total was 46.5. Assumed Stanford would chuck it. They take a 61 yard FG. My under is still okay, but why kick it down 10. Ummmm he made it.
I literally cannot buy a break in this cold streak lol. @shoc81 we can’t have nice things. #gamblingtwitter #cfb

I’m following an under 46 bet on Cal Stanford on gamecast and did I just lose on a meaningless SIXTY yard field goal? What?
