Stacey Dooley tells tragic story of murdered sisters in new documentary 'Two Daughters'

Mina Smallman is set to tell the story of her two daughters' murders in a new Stacey Dooley documentary for BBC Two.

Bibaa Henry, 46, and Nicole Smallman, 27, were reported missing on June 6, 2020 - having not returned from Bibaa's birthday celebration the night before in a London park.

The two sisters had been brutally murdered, with their bodies found the next day. The case has subsequently led their mother Mina, 65, "down a path of activism" to fight for a "proactive approach to women's safety".

The film will follow the trial of her daughters' killer as well the trials of two Met Police officers who had taken photographs of their bodies and shared them online.

It will also explore the role of faith and forgiveness in Mina's life as the first black, female archdeacon within the Church of England.

Her faith is said to have been a lifeline in coping with her grief and anger, with her spirituality having strengthened her resolve to fight to end violence against women.

Mina and her husband Chris Smallman have questioned the handling of the investigation and the treatment of the story in the national press.

They also ask whether society treats the murder of a woman of colour differently.

Viewers will see Stacey get a first-hand insight into what it's like for a family going through such tragedy, meeting Bibaa and Nicole's best friends to find out more about them.

Mina said: "This documentary has been guided by our choices in that we chose Stacey, not the other way around."

"The tragic death of our daughters and the further betrayal by Met Police officers at the scene of the crime, led us down a path of activism," she continued.

She added: "I've felt guided and protected by my faith. Our hope is this documentary will highlight the need for a more proactive approach to women's safety.

"Also an acknowledgment that women of colour do not receive the same level of media attention or unbiased attention."

Stacey commented: "When Mina asked me if I would make a film about her girls, I immediately wanted to help in any way I could."

She added: "This is Mina's film, and it's about highlighting the persistent, chronic problem we have with violence against women, whilst ensuring that Nicole and Bibaa are never forgotten, and beyond that, are celebrated.

"I'd like to sincerely thank Mina, Chris and Monique. I hope this documentary contributes to a desperately needed conversation."

The one-hour documentary - currently titled Two Daughters - will be broadcast on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. A release date has yet to be announced by the broadcaster.
