Paul McTaggart believes the future is bright for St Peter’s after their talented kids put on a serious display to despatch Campbeltown Pupils.
The Paisley club dished out a trashing against their Division 4 rivals, with 19-year-old Jay Lunney leading the way with a sensational hat-trick.
Fellow teenager Jamie Menzies and Marc Storrie also got in on the action in a one-sided affair at New Western Park,
And delighted St Peter’s manager McTaggart was pleased to see his side not take their foot of the gas as their debut campaign in the West of Scotland Football League draws to end.
Nevertheless he believes Campbeltown got off lightly as he feels the Paisley club could have hit double figures if they’d had their shooting boots on.
He told Express Sport: “5-0 flatters them to be honest with you.
“We must have had about 90 per cent possession in the whole game.
“We missed so many chances in the first half and only went in 1-0 up at half-time.
“I told the boys they needed to be more clinical because they only needed one chance and they could have been level.
“In fairness they scored four goals in about 15 minutes.
“Jay bagged his first senior hat-trick which was a huge moment for him.
“He thoroughly deserved it though as he’s been excellent this season.
“He was with Neilston’s under-20’s and wanted to test himself at this level. It’s fair to say he’s proving he’s got what it takes because he’s been an ever-present for us.
“Menzies was brilliant as well on the opposite wing. We’ve got a young squad and a lot of great under-20’s players coming through.
“We’re spoiled with a lot of good youngsters and the future looks really bright for us as a club.”
St Peter’s win moves them further into third spot in the table, with the club already looking ahead to their second campaign.
The Paisley club are in action against Campbeltown this weekend, this time away from home as they face the long journey to Kintyre.
McTaggart said: “Our intensity was brilliant and I was delighted with our performance.
“We want to finish strongly even though we know the title is away from us now.
“We’ve got the trip to Campbeltown this weekend and hopefully we can put in a similarly strong performance.
“They’ve got a grass pitch so it’ll be a lot more difficult to play our own game and try and keep hold of the ball.
“But we’ll do our best to keep the ball on the ground and hopefully we can pick up another three points and keep our good run going.”
