St Patrick's Day 2022: The other 'Emerald Isle' that has a public holiday for Paddy's Day

We in Ireland view St Patrick's Day as a massive international event at this stage with parades in major cities across the globe going green for the day.

But not even the likes of the US, Canada, Australia, or the UK have a public holiday to celebrate St Patrick's Day.

Most people believe that a public holiday for St Patrick's Day only take place on the island of Ireland.

But there is another "Emerald Isle" where Paddy's Day is as big a celebration as it is here

The tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat is the only other country to have a public holiday on St Patrick's Day.

The Irish connection goes all the way back to the 17th century, when Irish people were sent over to the Caribbean to work in indentured servitude on the orders of Oliver Cromwell.

And in the years that followed, Montserrat became a safe haven for Irish fleeing other Caribbean islands.

By 1678, a census carried out on the island showed that more than 50% of the island's inhabitants were Irish - so it's no surprise that the connection remains strong.

The Irish connections can be seen to this day, with arrivals at Montserrat's airport receiving a shamrock stamp on their passport.

The national symbol of Montserrat is the shamrock and the coat of arms on the national flag shows a female figure carrying a harp whose name is Erin.
