The title of a "house" at one of Queensland's most exclusive boys boarding schools will be reviewed after the ABC revealed the Christian Brother it was named after was a child abuser.
St Joseph's Nudgee College recently issued a statement to say it was conducting the review into the naming of the house after Brother Darcy Fidelis Murphy – a boarding master and deputy headmaster of the school in the 1980s and early 1990s.
It followed the ABC last week revealing Brother Murphy had been involved in a cover-up of his own abuse of a 14-year-old boarder at St Brendan's College in Yeppoon in 1978.
Murphy, who was the headmaster of St Brendan's at the time, had been accused of sneaking into the school's boarding house and trying to molest the boy while he slept in his bed.
The victim told the ABC, he fled the boarding house to get away from Murphy and ended up sleeping on the school oval.
After the assaults were reported, the victim said Murphy made him sign a false confession implying that he was sexually attracted to Murphy and had been acting out his fantasies.
The victim said he was then forced to read the confession over the phone to his father.
He later left the school and his education suffered as a result.
Two former Christian Brothers who taught at the school in 1978 confirmed they knew about the allegations raised about Murphy at the time.
Former Brother Mick Devlin said a member from the then Brothers' senior leadership team came to St Brendan's after the incident and promised that Murphy would never again be appointed to a boarding school.
However, in 1984 Murphy was listed as working as a teacher and as the Year 11 boarding house master at Nudgee College.
By 1987, he was the deputy headmaster – a role he held until the early 1990s.
Nudgee College said that one of the school's boarding premises had been named after Murphy but this ended in 2015 when the premise was renovated.
The college said one of the four "houses" that students are divided into, is named after Murphy.
"Given the allegations that have been raised in recent reports by the ABC Nudgee College will review that decision,'' the statement said.
"That review will consider any information gathered in an independent investigation commissioned by the Christian Brothers Oceania Province.
"Nudgee College has no record of any complaint made against Br Murphy however the college encourages anyone with any information to make contact with relevant authorities.
"We continue to do all that we can to create an environment in which our students can feel safe. This includes following strict protocols around child protection."
