Chris Millar lifted the Scottish Cup with St Johnstone in 2014 and he insists he has just as much desire to go and lift the South Challenge Cup with Lowland League East Kilbride this season.
The Kilby skipper will lead his side into a last 16 tie against Lanarkshire rivals Cumbernauld Colts at Broadwood on Saturday, and he hopes it will be the next step on the road to some silverware this season.
EK had a valiant exit from the Scottish Cup fourth round late last month as they were beaten by League One Peterhead on penalties and, despite being pre-season title favourites, Millar’s side find themselves fifth in the league and 16 points off runaway leaders Bonnyrigg Rose.
The South Challenge Cup represents a major opportunity for EK to salvage something from a disappointing season and Millar said: “No matter what level I’m playing at, any cup competition I’m in I want to win it.
”It doesn’t matter if it’s the Scottish Cup or the South Challenge Cup.
”It’s something instilled in me as a player that I want to win every game and every trophy I can.
“I’ve still got that desire to go and be successful and win trophies. It’s something that’s always been in me as a player.
“It’s important we do something this season. The league looks like it’s out of reach now and we are out of the Scottish Cup, so we want to try and make it some form of successful season.”
EK go into the clash off the back of a shock 0-0 draw with bottom of the table Vale of Leithen at K-Park on Saturday.
And Millar is looking for a reaction to that disappointment, as Kilby battle on following the loss of some key players during the last couple of months.
He added: “We didn’t perform to the levels we know we are capable of and we were massively disappointed not to win the game.
“But we are looking forward to the cup game now.
“It’s a competition we want to progress in and try and win because we feel this season some of our results haven’t been as good as they should be.
“This would give us something to show for the season and it’s important we go to Cumbernauld on Saturday and put things right from the weekend.
“We’ve lost a few players. Chris Erskine and Gregg Wyle are big losses for us, losing boys of that calibre will hurt any team.
“But there is more than enough in that dressing room still there to go on and get a result on Saturday, and push on to go and win the competition. Cumbernauld beat us at the start of the season and that’s something we weren’t happy about, so that will be in the back of our minds a bit going into Saturday.
“But in any game you’ve got to turn up and try to win it.”
Boss Chris Aitken is equally determined to get his hands on silverware. He said: “We want to go and win this cup.
“We need to put in a good performance to get through.”
