St Johnstone 2 Rangers 1: Brown and Clark on target in stunning Saints win

A James Brown wonder goal and a lovely Nicky Clark finish earned St Johnstone a stunning win against Rangers.

Wing-back Brown had opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a phenomenal strike before Clark doubled the advantage just after the hour mark.

James Tavernier pulled one back for Rangers and that resulted in a nervous finish for the Perth support.

But Saints dug deep to pick up a huge three points and move up to fifth in the Scottish Premiership.

Regular No.1 Remi Matthews was absent from the team-sheet with a hip injury and that meant Elliott Parish was given the nod between the posts.

Parish was called into action in the sixth minute of the match to beat away Malik Tillman’s back post attempt from a Tavernier cross. He was then down smartly on 10 minutes to push a John Lundstram guided effort behind for a corner kick.

Rangers were dominating the early exchanges both in terms of possession and opportunities. They went even closer to the opener when Fashion Sakala nodded off the crossbar.

The Glasgow visitors continued to dominate and look dangerous, forcing a succession of corners as Saints struggled to get out their own half. But out of nowhere, in the 41st minute, arrived a moment of magic.

Wing-back Brown pulled the trigger from distance and the ball whistled through the Perth air before almost taking the pegs out the net. It was a stunning opener and his first goal since arriving at the club.

Saints looked sharper after the break and went close to doubling their lead on 56 minutes following terrific work on the byline by Stevie May.

He squeezed into the box before passing across the face of goal where David Wotherspoon attempted to nudge the ball over the line from close range. He was denied. But Saints were not denied a second in the 61st minute.

In-form May produced the goods with lovely trickery on the left to carve out space for the cross and there was Clark, displaying top class striker play, to jink in front of his man to divert high into the net.

Lundstram attempted to pull Rangers back into the game on 70 minutes but his strike hit the outside of the post.

Soon after, however, the visitors did have a lifeline when the ball broke for Tavernier at the edge of the box and his effort found a way beyond Parish.

Lundstram then smashed the underside of the crossbar as Perth legs started to tire.

Drey Wright and Connor McLennan were sent on to freshen things up, replacing Wotherspoon and May. Both could be very content with their afternoon of work.

Theo Bair and Daniel Phillips also entered the action late on as Saints dug so deep, plus four additional minutes, to absorb Rangers pressure and hold out for the win.
