St Johnstone will head into the World Cup break on a five-game unbeaten run after adding another Premiership point on Saturday afternoon.
Drey Wright’s close-range finish was cancelled out by a deflected Blair Spittal free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
Despite not being able to find a winner after the break, Saints enter the pause from play sixth in the Scottish Premiership.
Stevie May had recovered from midweek illness to take his position in the forward department alongside Nicky Clark, fresh from his wonderful acrobatic leveller in Paisley.
Saints were seeking to enter the World Cup break with their recent momentum intact and, certainly, the start here in Perth was a reasonably competent one.
Graham Carey had an early right-footed attempt blocked behind for a corner and May appeared keen to run beyond the visiting defensive line.
Motherwell, too, had carved out a couple of promising openings with Kevin van Veen, in particular, on the hunt for a breakthrough - albeit without success.
There was a breakthrough at the other end, however, when Wright nudged over the line from close range with 26 minutes on the clock.
The foundations were beautifully put down by the craft and guile of David Wotherspoon whose delightful ball roll bamboozled the opposition inside the box.
His neat feet created the required space for a strike and, while it was saved by Liam Kelly, Wright was positioned nicely to apply the finish.
Saints were zipping the ball around rather nicely and Adam Montgomery’s cross as the whistle for the break approached was only missing a touch from a blue jersey.
Just as the teams were about to trundle in for half-time, Motherwell were handed a lifeline and Spittal took advantage with a free-kick that took a wicked deflection and nestled in the far corner of the net.
There was little to get excited about early in the second half but on the hour mark Melker Hallberg’s powerful drive cannoned off a couple of bodies before edging past the post.
Fresh legs arrived in the closing 15 minutes with James Brown, Ali Crawford and Connor McLennan all entering the action, replacing Montgomery, Wotherspoon and May.
There was soon a scare when Louis Moult stole possession off skipper Liam Gordon and forced goalkeeper Remi Matthews to turn the cross away with his leg. The ball broke for van Veen whose shot was blocked.
Crawford attempted to win it late on with a low drive from the edge of the box but his strike was saved by Liam Kelly.
