UK & Ireland Top 100 Golf Courses 2023/24 - 25

St George’s Hill Golf Club sits in the Surrey stockbroker belt, an area packed with heathland golf of the very highest order. Many keen golfers consider the Red/Blue combination here to be as good as any in the area. It is certainly one of the very best golf courses in Surrey.

Everything here is premier league, from the undulating pine-clad holes to the very distinctive and characterful clubhouse. The course was designed by arguably the greatest architect of all time, Harry Colt, and it opened for play in 1913. The run through the most magnificent pine and over abundant, and at times punishing, heather. In the summer, it is an absolute picture and is rightly near the top of the list of the best inland golf courses in the UK.

It is a timeless classic running over a quintessential English landscape and one of the very best golf courses in England. Here, you genuinely feel as though you have stepped back in time. What lifts it even higher from simply being a glorious place to play is that it has significant but easy-walking elevation changes. These add very much to the visual appeal as well as asking questions on club selection. The instantly recognisable clubhouse is perfectly situated above the greens of the two strong par 4s that close each nine.

Out on the course, Colt’s trademark bunkers abound. As intended, they sometimes deceive the eye due to their location, but they also certainly please it. There is also plenty of risk and reward, and if you had to pick out a signature hole, it would be a tough call as there are just so many. Having said that, the par-3 8th is an absolute pearl. Both beautiful and testing, this exquisite one-shotter plays across a valley and up over an expanse of heather and sand.

The Green nine is a little shorter but still great fun. Play St George’s Hill when the heather is in bloom and you may well struggle to concentrate on your game.

What The Top 100 Panel Said

A course and club in wonderful condition throughout. A real test as you approach the green with severe undulations testing your short game. Excellent putting surfaces with many undulations and slopes to test you even further. A challenging course with great use of elevation changes to add to the difficulty. Fantastic in the setting sun.

From the moment you enter the estate you know you’re somewhere special. The feeling only intensifies as you wind your way up the driveway towards the magnificent clubhouse. As much fun as inland golf gets. It’s nigh on impossible to play at St George’s Hill without a huge smile on your face.

This is a course I genuinely get very excited about visiting and playing. It is a true Surrey heathland masterpiece. The course is breathtakingly beautiful, and the clubhouse is as majestic as you will find anywhere.

Probably one of the most opulent surroundings in golf. Just arriving at the course is an experience in itself. It’s a golfing oasis, one of England’s finest courses, with the heritage and ambience befitting a great club.

An impressive property that has history, an impressive clubhouse, Colt’s unique architecture and a fair and challenging test.
