St Cuthbert Wanderers work from home after Stranraer game postponed

St Cuthbert Wanderers worked from home on Saturday.

The cold snap meant the artificial playing surface at St Mary’s Park was unplayable and their game against Stranraer was called off.

But instead of a day off, the players were given programmes to work on individually.

And a similar approach could be taken this weekend as the weather is unlikely to improve.

Boss Josh Gardner said: “We gave them home training plans.

“We ran a wee competition to make it a bit interesting.

“Our pitch was totally unusable, it was a bit of a health and safety risk.

“We trained last Wednesday but even at that point the pitch was touch and go. We stopped a bit early as it was getting unsafe so I knew the park wasn’t going to be ready for Saturday.

“We’re trying to make alternative plans to see if we can get another facility but it’s not looking good.”

Should the weather improve, Saints will be at home to South of Scotland League leaders Creetown.

Jamie Adams’ side have won six of their seven games and also lifted the League Cup earlier in the campaign.

Gardner said: “Jamie and the coaches have been brilliant and you have to give them credit.

“They’ve got a really strong side and it’s built on a really solid defensive structure. They’ve only conceded one goal in the league - they’ve only played seven games but it’s good going at any level.

“We played them pre-season and in the cup at the start of the season.

“They beat us 4-0 in pre-season then 5-4 in the cup. The games were pretty even but they were maybe a bit more streetwise than us.

“For me they are the team to beat just now. Abbey Vale and Lochar Thistle are going well as well but the form and defensive structure Creetown have is quite formidable and they’re going to be hard to break down.

“Players want to play against the best players in any region or league.

“They need to enjoy the challenge and opportunity to pit themselves against them.”
