An abandoned snake has been found in Paisley as an animal charity says pet owners are facing heartbreaking decisions due to the cost-of-living crisis.
The reptile was abandoned outside a property in Morven Avenue in town last week with a note accompanying it which read “please feed my snake one mouse a day”.
The snake — which was well looked after — was discovered inside its vivarium by a resident around 7.45am on Thursday, April 13.
It is not known why the snake was abandoned, however, the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) has said the cost-of-living crisis could be to blame.
Scottish SPCA inspector Isla Bell said: “We can confirm that this snake is now safe in our care after a member of the public discovered the abandoned reptile in a vivarium outside their property.
“The snake was found in good body condition, with a note that said, “please feed my snake one mouse a day”.
“We know that the cost-of-living crisis is causing worry to pet owners, but abandoning animals is never the answer.
“If you are struggling to care for your pets, please contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999 for assistance and advice.
“If anyone recognises this snake or has any information about how they came to be abandoned, please call our helpline.”
William Ewatt of Proexotics pet store on Causeyside Street told the Paisley Daily Express that snakes are actually one of the cheapest pets to keep.
After the initial purchase of the animal and the vivarium, the only costs are a 40-watt heat lamp to keep the snake warm and one mouse every 5-10 days at a cost of £1.40 a mouse.
“They’re one of the cheapest animals you can keep,” said William.
