Squid Game The Challenge turns Netflix hit into reality show

Netflix has turned one of its most successful TV series into a reality show, where contestants could win a £3.5 million prize.

South Korean thriller Squid Game became an international hit when it premiered on the platform in September 2021. During its first 28 days, it earned 1.65 billion hours of viewing.

The show followed desperate, debt-ridden contestants as they fought it out to win a share of a huge prize pot. Only as the games progressed, they realised it was life or death, with people being eliminated in a variety of gruesome ways.

Now, Squid Game: The Challenge will see 456 real-life players compete for a $4.56 (or £3.52 million) grand prize. While the reality show won't be a matter of life or death, the series of games will see each player pushed to their limits.

They'll be forced to ask themselves just how far they’ll go to win, with opportunistic alliances, cutthroat strategies and timely betrayals to follow. The show was filmed in the UK, the streaming service revealed.

The 10-part series will air in November. In a new clip, Netflix teased the show's set-up - and confirmed that the huge, creepy 'red light, green light' doll would be making its return. Watch the clip in full below.

It comes as Netflix also announced at Tudum 2023: A Netflix Global Fan Event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that The Acolyte star Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo would be returning for season two of the show Squid Game.

It also teased new cast member from South Korean boy band ZE:A singer Yim Si-Wan, actors Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon, and rapper, record producer and actor Yang Dong-Geun will also be starring as new players.

Previously, the second season of Squid Game had been confirmed for release in 2024.
