Spring cleaning? I tried the game-changing cleaning tools worth splashing out on

The sun has finally made an appearance this year, and that can only mean one thing — it’s spring cleaning time.

Get ready to wipe away the winter cobwebs, open up the windows, get the yellow gloves on, and prepare for the great seasonal cleaning ritual.

Giving the whole house a deep clean from floor to ceiling is always easier with the right equipment, so we’ve searched for the best gadgets that make spring cleaning even more satisfying.

Best spring cleaning gadgets at a glance

Why is spring cleaning a thing?

Spring marks a time of new beginnings and fresh starts, and as the dark days of winter are behind us, spring cleaning brings with it many benefits, outside of simply having a clean house.

It is known to be therapeutic, offering a sense of control, reduced stress and anxiety, and a dopamine boost. Getting rid of dirt and clutter instantly improves wellbeing and leaves behind a sense of a job well done. Long before robot vacs, spring was traditionally the time when people would throw open their doors and sweep out the dirt and soot from winter.

So, spring cleaning is all about upholding seasonal routines that existed long before people had gadgets to help out.

How I tested

Each product was tested in a real-world home environment, tackling everyday stains, spills and debris, as well as more neglected areas that required a rigorous clean.

In testing, I purposefully left some clutter around the testing site to assess, monitor and rate what it would be like to use these gadgets in an everyday setting.

Dyson Spot and Scrub Ai robot vacuum cleaner

Best for: hands-free cleaning

From the moment we unboxed the Dyson Spot and Scrub robot, I knew it was the complete hands-free cleaning package.

Set-up was simple with a handy app to walk you through the process. Before long, the robot was having its first run through the house. I watched the robot actively avoiding small obstacles, learning the layout of each room as it went along. Using Ai technology, this vacuum detects stains and continuously cleans until the spill or mark is lifted. An angled green light reveals hidden stains and dust, then the machine adapts its power levels to clear the mess.

I love that the machine cleans using 60°C heated water on every rotation, washing itself as it goes, ensuring that the robot is using fresh water throughout the cleaning cycle.

Although this gadget is powered by a 18000 Pa motor that captures invisible microscopic dust particles and debris, it is remarkably quiet whilst in motion, meaning it could clean the house overnight when everyone is in bed.

The chevron silicone roller lifts up to 10mm when it detects carpets and removes hair from carpets and hard floors. I was impressed with the rotating side brushes that reach into the corners of kitchen cabinets and around the legs of tables and chairs. The dock empties dry debris using powerful cyclones, removing the need for bags and preventing the robot from losing suction power, and the one-touch ejection system drives dust deep into the bin in one action.

This is an incredibly sophisticated machine that takes the hassle out of everyday cleaning, and looks good whilst doing it.

Karcher K5 Comfort Premium Pressure Washer

Best for: a garden makeover

If you’ve never used a pressure washer before, then get ready to feel more excited than you ever thought possible about cleaning driveways, patio slabs and garden furniture.

The Karcher K5 Comfort Premium pressure washer lifts dirt with its 4-in-1 multi-jet spray, which can switch between a rotary nozzle, high-pressure flat jet, reduced-pressure flat jet and detergent jet. With easy setup and a comfortable trigger gun, this pressure washer is a market leader for a reason.

With its powerful water-cooled motor, I found it maintained consistent pressure when in use, whether removing winter debris from the garden patio, washing away dirt from the driveway, or cleaning mud from car wheels. The machine has a 10m high-pressure hose, plus cables and accessories can be stored compactly on the device.

As for the washer, it is made from 25 per cent recycled material, and it comes with a bottle of cleaning fluid to get things started from the get-go.

Fair warning: there’s no avoiding the stop-start noise of a pressure washer whilst in use, but it’s worth the temporary brain buzz to transform your outdoor spaces, ready for the brighter weather.

Lakeland Turbo Scrubber Cordless Bathroom Cleaning Kit

Best for: a sparkling bathroom without the elbow grease.

There’s only one way to make bathroom chores fun, and that’s with a good playlist and a cordless cleaning brush.

Save hours of endless scrubbing (and the sore arms that come with it) with this clever cleaning tool that comes with four brushes to tackle different surfaces, from tiles, to shower doors.

The rotating head has a powerful 220rpm motor that removes even the most stubborn stains, from discolouration between tiles to limescale build-ups. The brush sits on a telescopic extension rod that reaches over a metre, so you can clean to the highest parts of the room, or reach underneath cabinets with ease. The 50ml dispenser unit holds cleaning liquid or water, and when testing, I added a few drops of essential oil to the water, which left the bathroom smelling fresh for days afterwards.

Using this gadget meant I was able to clean awkward areas that are often overlooked, like reaching above the shower head, into the corners of the shower tray and behind the towel rail. The brush stayed on full power for an hour before the lithium battery needed recharging.

Lakeland Carpet Spot Cleaner

Best for: lifting old stains

There’s always one spill that won’t budge, no matter what cleaning products you use, but the Lakeland Carpet Spot Cleaner lifted every mark I levelled at it, removing coffee, wine, and stubborn marks left by the kids' crayons that were meant to be washable.

Rather than hovering just above the carpet, the powerful water pressure from this machine penetrates down to the deepest fibres, lifting even the toughest stains. I liked the handy LED display that made it easy to switch between the four cleaning modes during testing. The appliance is so easy to lift and move around the whole house, either by the handle or by wheeling it along the floor.

Using the warm water mode, I gently cleaned a set of door curtains with scuffs disappearing quickly, but the real highlight of this product is the steam mode, which lifted areas of discolouration and muddy footprints from the carpet, leaving the room feeling fresher.

With separate clean and dirty water tanks, it’s easy to get rid of the dirt without any chance of cross-contamination.

Shark StainForce Spot Cleaner

Best for: refreshing sofas and cushions

If you’re going to spend time spring cleaning, then make it easy for yourself with Shark’s all-in-one stain remover. The Shark StainForce is a cordless carpet and upholstery cleaner that works its magic on everything from muddy flooring and messy car mats to tired upholstery and stained carpets.

Housed in its very own caddy, this handy little gadget is easy to grab at a moment's notice, even before the red wine spill sinks in. I wondered if it could handle the state of my sofa cushions, but it excelled, dissolving a handful of random stains in minutes, using either nozzle.

Cleaning soft furnishings often feels like an afterthought, but with an appliance as portable as this, it’s easy to give scatter cushions and blankets a quick refresh without any fuss. Once you’ve tackled the carpet and mystery marks on the sofa, take the machine out to the car and give the interior a much-needed spruce.

Von Haus Ash Vacuum

Best for: barbecue cleaning

This shiny silver vacuum promises to clean up debris from barbecues, fire pits and log burning stoves, by trapping the ash particles in a filter to allow for easier disposal.

At first, I wondered if this appliance would get much use, but after testing on a used barbecue, I was impressed by how quickly it removed the ash build-up, removing the age-old problem of needing to keep a dirty cloth nearby to catch the debris.

This powerful 1000W vacuum cleaner makes cleaning up the ashy aftermath easy, and is fitted with a HEPA filter which traps any particles, preventing them from recirculating around your home. After use, the filter can be washed and reused.

I plugged the 4m long power cord into an outdoor socket and had plenty of room to move around the barbecue whilst cleaning. The 1.25m flexible hose reaches into awkward corners and is long enough to capture dirt at the back of fireplaces, chimneys, firepits, and stoves.

A vacuum I didn't know I needed, that takes the hassle out of this messy spring cleaning task and has the grill ready for BBQ season.

Steamery Cirrus X Steamer

Best for: wardrobe spring cleaning

One of the last stops on the spring cleaning circuit is the wardrobe. There’s something satisfying about packing up clothes to donate or sell, but the clothes we choose to keep should be cared for properly. Steaming is the fastest way to freshen your clothes, whilst also killing 99.9 per cent of bacteria.

Arriving in its own fabric tote bag, the Steamery Cirrus X Steamer is sleek and sophisticated, more of a fashion accessory in itself. The appliance feels incredibly well designed, crafted by a Swedish brand that cares about preserving the lifetime of the clothes we all wear.

Simply place the garment on a hanger and press the steamer head against the fabric, moving slowly downwards to remove creases. I tried it on a linen shirt prone to creasing, and the steamer made light work of the worst areas, including an uneven collar, which suddenly revived itself. This steamer will make you fall in love with old pieces again. It even comes with a hand mitt to help protect skin against the hot steam.

If ironing makes your heart sink, you’ll love using a steamer. A worthwhile investment that will breathe new life into your clothes, well beyond spring cleaning season.

Halo Capsule XR stick vacuum cleaner

Best for: quick everyday cleaning

This stick vacuum from Halo packs as much punch as the offerings from larger, more well-known brands, and is invented by an engineer who used to work for them. I was impressed with the machine’s suction power, its capacity and the way it travelled around corners smoothly.

The lightweight design makes spring cleaning a breeze, with easy transitions between hard flooring and carpets. It seemed to clean well on both surfaces, capturing dirt from tiny grooves in the wood flooring and lifting crumbs from carpet fibres with ease. The vacuum head reaches into the dustiest corners and prevents dust from spreading with its HEPA filtration filter, ensuring the air stays clean as you move around your home.

This vacuum is the ideal choice for everyday cleaning, especially if you have lots of flooring to get around, and need a machine with a large capacity cylinder.

Russell Hobbs Steam & Clean Steam Mop

Best for: Cleaning without chemicals

The greatest benefit of a steam mop is chemical-free cleaning, making it the ideal choice for homes with children and pets.

Using hot water alone, steam mops sanitise the floor, killing up to 99.9 per cent of invisible bacteria and germs, and loosen dirt and grease without the need for manual scrubbing.

I tested the Russell Hobbs steam and clean mop, and on its arrival, was immediately reminded of retro kitchen appliances, with its subtle pastel colour and curved angles.

Lightweight and easy to assemble, I marvelled how it travelled smoothly across hard flooring with 1400W steam power that made quick work of splatters around the kitchen table, and left only a few patches of water behind that dried quickly.

Accessories include a measuring jug, carpet glider and two microfibre mop pads that are machine washable. Simply fill up the jug and within 30 seconds you’re ready to start steaming.

In tests, steam lasted for around ten minutes before needing to be topped up.

Russell Hobbs Atlas 2 Cylinder Vacuum

Best for: affordable cleaning

When it comes to vacuum cleaners, people tend to be in one of two camps — cordless or corded. If the latter is your preference, then the Russell Hobbs Atlas 2 Cylinder Vacuum is a solid choice.

I gave the living room carpet a thorough clean with this appliance, and was impressed with the 700W suction power that seemed to reach deep into the carpet fibres, and the large drum full of dust at the end spoke for itself. It comes with a 3-in-1 multipurpose tool, which I used to clean awkward areas like around the feet of the sofa, the skirting boards and behind the radiator.

During testing, I only plugged the machine into two sockets, making use of the 80cm extendable tube and 5m power cord to manoeuvre the vacuum around the house.

This vacuum is an affordable purchase that’s easy to use and has all the features needed for both everyday cleaning and more intense seasonal deep cleans.

Verdict

Dyson’s Spot and Scrub AI robot vacuum cleaner is a high-performing appliance that is clever, efficient, and undeniably a thing of beauty.

Whilst you focus on better things, it will glide from one room to the next, keeping your flooring clean, without a hint of debris in sight. Although it’s a significant investment, we think it’s an invaluable addition to any family home.
