Star Petroleum Refining Plc (SPRC) has reportedly paid about 90% of due compensation, worth 299 million baht, for two crude oil leaks in Rayong at the start of the year.
Earlier this week, a handful of hotel and restaurant entrepreneurs at Mae Ramphueng beach and Koh Samet filed a lawsuit against the company, demanding 38.8 million baht in compensation over the spills, which they say negatively impacted the area after leaks occurred.
The SPRC issued a statement saying it has continually provided financial support to those impacted by the Rayong spill.
"The SPRC has made substantial progress and compensated about 90% of eligible claimants with payments of over 299 million baht to more than 10,300 individuals and businesses," the firm said.
A pipeline owned by SPRC leaked on two separate occasions earlier this year.
On Jan 25, 47,000 litres of crude oil leaked from its pipeline near Map Ta Phut.
The second spill was on Feb 10, when another 5,000 litres of crude oil began gushing out of the same pipeline.
The SPRC said it is committed to supporting those affected in a fair, transparent, reasonable and timely manner.
The company said it has worked with academics from three leading universities to carry out 11 marine study projects. It also said it has set up a panel to consider the appeals and claims of those affected.
