With spring soon to be approaching, and the days getting longer, it'll soon be time to turn our thoughts to a wee break away.
If you're craving fresh air, quiet time, and the open road, then a wee campervan break could be the ideal solution to get away for a few days.
With the interest in campervan holidays and staycations growing and many seeing the freedom of the open road as appealing, we’ve teamed up with the Scottish Caravan, Motorhome and Holiday Home Show to round up the best spots within an hour of Glasgow for the ultimate motorhome escape.

Culzean Castle
Remember that place you used to visit all the time as a child? Well, it’s still there and it’s as spectacular as ever and the perfect place to park up with your motorhome. Less than an hour from Glasgow, Culzean Castle Camping and Caravanning Club site is right within the grounds of the Castle so the surroundings are spectacular.
Near the town of Maybole and not far at all from the larger town of Ayr, there are plenty of nearby spots for a meal. The beach is minutes away and the vast open Ayrshire countryside surrounds the park making for peaceful, energising walks. If it’s a bit of culture you’re after you can pay a visit to the castle and learn about the aristocratic families who lived there. The site has plenty of pitches for motorhomes, but advance booking is required.
Crianlarich
Venturing further north, the Perthshire countryside is the perfect spot to enjoy the great outdoors. Strathfillan Wigwam Village in Crianlarich is approximately 45 minute drive from Glasgow and the perfect example of a Scottish adventure. Nestled amidst the wooded glens of the Trossachs National Park and near Loch Lomond, Strathfillan has everything you need as a basecamp to enjoy the magic of Scotland’s wilderness.
The campsite sits on a working farm and is close to the River Allt. There are also plenty of cycle paths nearby and even some fishing. The campsite itself is well equipped and has a small farm shop onsite for delicious bacon rolls and other local treats.
Moffat
Moffat Campsite, run by the Camping and Caravanning Club, is just an hour down the M74 and only a five-minute walk from the pretty Victorian spa town of Moffat.
The town has one of the broadest high streets in Scotland but conversely is also in the Guinness Book of Records for having the narrowest hotel, The Star Hotel, in the world. If it’s the scenery you’re after then there is no shortage. The magnificent Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall is nearby as is the historic Drumlanrig Castle with its beautiful landscaped gardens.
Loch Lomond
For the ultimate escape, just a short drive from Glasgow, then Loch Lomond is a must. The Lomond Woods Holiday Park is a 5 star park with plenty of pitches for motorhomes. On the doorstep of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park there is no shortage of things to whole the day away.
The stunning scenery of Loch Lomond is just footsteps away and there are so many outdoor activities you won’t know what to choose first. From loch cruises and watersports to high rope courses and mountain biking this is the perfect choice if you’re a bit of a thrill seeker. There are also some great food and drink options in the vicinity. Duck Bay Marina is close by as is the Waterhouse Inn and Cucina, an Italian Bistro in Alexandria.
Alva
The Woods Caravan Park in Alva, Clackmannanshire is a Caravan and Motorhome Club-affiliated site. Only 40 minutes from Glasgow, this site is the ideal base camp to enjoy the beauty of Stirlingshire. Ideal for families, there is so much to do around the park.
Blair Drummond Safari Park, Stirling Castle and the Falkirk Wheel are all less than a half-hour drive away and closer to the camp there is pony trekking and off-road cycling to name but a few. The park itself has a 180-degree panorama view of the Ochil Hills. It’s quiet and peaceful and has plenty of facilities, including an onsite restaurant, The Woodsman.
East Lothian
Just over an hour from Glasgow is Tantallon Caravan Park Overlooking the Firth of Forth across to the Fife Coast and unrivalled views of the Bass Rock with the world’s largest colony of gannets, this park is an ideal choice for exploring East Lothian.
If it’s fresh air you’re craving, then a brisk walk along the beach followed by a spot of lunch and a wander around North Berwick could be just what the doctor ordered. Or visit Tantallon Castle, an imposing cliff-top castle with breathtaking views out to May island. The campsite has plenty of facilities, a play area for kids, a putting green, shop and games room, as well as ample pitches for your motorhome.
