A sports pitch at a popular park could be made temporarily unusable by the building of a controversial sewage pumping station. Cardiff Council has confirmed that a site at Hailey Park, which includes part of one of the rugby pitches near the Ty Mawr Road entrance, is being considered for a works compound.
The proposal has not yet been approved and a number of other potential sites are also being looked at. The compound would be used during the construction of a sewage pumping station at the park. A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: “The site currently proposed by Welsh Water for a temporary works compound would impinge on the touchline of one of the Hailey Park sport pitches.
"This proposal has not yet been agreed and alternative options are being put forward for discussion. Once built, the pumping station will have no impact on sports pitch provision.” The plan for a new sewage pumping station, which was met with staunch opposition from a number of Llandaff North residents and park users, was approved on September 8.

The idea behind the pumping station is to allow excess sewage from the Plasdwr housing development in north west Cardiff to be transported to Cardiff Wastewater Treatment Works. Dwr Cymru confirmed that discussions are taking place between them and Cardiff Council about setting up a temporary works compound.
However, they have also given assurances that the sewage pumping station will not have an impact on any of the rugby pitches once built. A Dwr Cymru spokesperson said: "We have been working closely with Cardiff Council throughout the planning and design stages of the new pumping station to ensure the park remains a safe place for people to enjoy while we carry out our work.
"Once built, the new pumping station will not impact the provision for two rugby pitches. However, for public safety it is possible there may be some restrictions on the use of the pitches during construction. This is subject to further discussion with the relevant parties before work gets underway.”
Once the pumping station is built, the sewage from Plasdwr will travel underneath the River Taff to Hailey Park, where it will be pumped from 17 metres below the surface to five metres below the surface. It will then be transported along an existing sewage system to Cardiff Wastewater Treatment Works.
