Spooked drivers say 'ghastly' bollards shaped like children are 'stuff of nightmares'

Creepy child -shaped bollards that stare icily at motorists as they drive past have been described as "the stuff of nightmares".

The mannequins sit along a busy road in the village of Stoney Staunton in Leicestershire to remind drivers to be careful as there could be kids in the area.

They were actually installed two years ago, but ended up in the spotlight this weekend after a video was posted on Twitter by Andrew Cooper, who lives in Leicester.

He said they reminded him of the sci-fi novel and TV show, The Midwich Cuckoos, where a women in a village give birth to children who are actually parasitic aliens, reports The Daily Star.

Andrew posted: "Because no one ever believes me when I tell them that one of our neighbouring villages has made their bollards look like Midwich Cuckoo style children, I have recorded the ghastly proof on video."

He added: "It's worse at night."

Social media users were equally horrified, with most agreeing the bollards are terrifying.

The "stuff of nightmares" wrote one, while another said: "Crikey. That is very disturbing."

A third person posted: "I think the painted bollards would be more of a distraction rather than a warning of children around which could be more dangerous?"

The bollards - named Billie and Belinda - were installed by Stoney Stanton Parish Council and the local school in July 2020 as part of a drive safe scheme.

The video clip shows Andrew driving past the figures, followed by close ups of their stoney-faced expressions staring into the distance.

Andrew admitted that he didn't notice if there is any school around, explaining: "Whenever I go through, I'm too mesmerised by the creepy bollards to notice anything else."

Parish clerk Roz Ward is said to be the person who made the bollards a reality.

The eerie figures are not the first of their kind - other places, including Windsor, also have them
