Splits Coming? 13 Stocks Still Cost A Ridiculous $1,000 Or More

Stock splits are making a comeback — but there are still plenty of sky-high share prices in the S&P 500.

Thirteen S&P 500 stocks, including homebuilder NVR, travel agent Booking Holdings and Chipotle Mexican Grill, are all trading for more than 1,000 a share, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSurge.

And that's even following a massive 10-for-one split by Nvidia.

The Rising Price Of S&P 500 Stocks

It's not surprising the share prices of stocks keep pushing the limit.

The average S&P 500 stock is up 5%, pushing the average per-share price in the index to 217, excluding Berkshire Hathaway class A shares at 613,860. That's well past the typical 70 a share where companies normally will consider a split.

And already, the S&P 500 split announcements are rolling in. Chipotle, trading at 3,365 a share, announced a split this year. So, too, did computer chip designer Broadcom at 1,839 a share.

But high-priced S&P 500 stocks still abound.

More Splits To Come?

NVR is the most dearly priced stocks after Berkshire Hathaway's A shares. The homebuilder's shares trade for 7,688 apiece following a nearly 10% rally this year. And third highest is Booking, with shares at 3,953 each after an 11.4% run this year.

Could more splits be coming? Absolutely. Already this year, nine S&P 500 stocks completed splits. And with stocks at nosebleed levels, more are certainly on the way.
