Spitfire replicas, real tanks and other wartime vehicles to appear in Bridgend this summer as part of big free event

A big and free wartime event returns this summer following a Covid-related hiatus.

The World War Two event will take over Bridgend town centre on Saturday, July 16, transporting it back to the 1940s.

Full-size replicas of a Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane will be available to see, as well as an original M10 Achilles Tank Destroyer, which is the only operational one of its kind in the UK.

Vintage vehicles, army personnel, a Winston Churchill impressionist and 1940s themed stalls and activities will all be available, suitable for the whole family.

The smallest vintage-style cinema in the world, The Sol Cinema, will be set up as well as a live music stage featuring local vintage girl group Midnight Martini, forces sweetheart Kitty Lamare, trumpeter Ricky Hunter and Colin Bourdieu as George Formby.

A spokesperson for Bridgend Town Council added: "We are very honoured this year to have the Wales 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Exhibition which will be housed inside Carnegie House.

"This exhibition is currently touring Wales and tells the unique story of Welsh involvement in the Battle of Britain."

Additional displays from displays by Hut 9 Island Farm, Barry at War, Porthcawl Museum, and the Military Vehicles Trust will also be at the wartime event.

While the event hoped to return in 2021, the decision was made to cancel proceedings given the ongoing pandemic situation.

Bridgend Town Council has now confirmed however that this years' event will go ahead as planned.
