They still need a drummer.
A sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap” was announced Thursday, and all four major characters are set to return.
Rob Reiner will return as the fictional and actual director, while Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer will once again star as “one of England’s loudest bands,” Deadline reported. However, their drummer has not been announced.
The follow-up to 1984′s beloved mockumentary is scheduled to premiere March 19, 2024, just over 40 years after the original was released.
Reiner, who debuted as a director with the original film, said the sequel will be based on a classic premise: The band is forced to get back together for one last show.
“All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into, and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert,” Reiner told Deadline.
While the original “Spinal Tap” wasn’t exactly a box office smash, it gained a cult following large enough that McKean (vocalist David St. Hubbins), Guest (lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel) and Shearer (bassist Derek Smalls) played real concerts in character.
Ric Parnell, who played drummer Mick Shrimpton in the original film and doubled as “Rick Shrimpton” on the real-life tour, died last week.
Reiner also suggested that multiple rock stars could make cameos in the sequel.
“Hopefully there will be some guest artists,” he told Deadline. “We’ve had a lot of bands share their experiences, and so hopefully we’ll include some of that in the film.”
