Spider-Man's Tom Holland announces social media break after trolls send him 'spiralling'

Tom Holland has revealed he is taking a break from social media for the sake of his mental health.

The Spider-Man star, 26, announced the news on Instagram on Saturday following his decision to step back from his social platforms.

Addressing fans in a video, Tom revealed that he has also deleted Twitter from his phone after it became "detrimental to his mental state".

He said in the clip: "Hi guys. So I've been trying to make this video for about an hour now, and for someone that has spent that last 13, 14 years, however long I've been acting…

"I cannot seem to say what I need to say without 'um-ing' and 'ah-ing' every five minutes, so I'm gonna try again.

"I have taken a break from social media for my mental health, because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming, I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online, and ultimately, it's very detrimental to my mental state, so I decided to take a step back and delete the app."

Alongside the clip, Tom encouraged his fans to donate to Stem4 - a charity that supports positive mental health in teenagers.

The actor captioned the post: "Hello and goodbye... I have been taking a break from social media for my mental health, but felt compelled to come on here to talk about @stem4org.

"Stem4 is one of the many charities @thebrotherstrust is extremely proud to support - and I’d like to take a moment to shine a light on their fantastic work. Please take the time to watch my video, and should you feel inclined to share it with anyone who it may resonate with - it would be greatly appreciated."

He concluded: "There is a link in my bio to The Brothers Trust Shop, where you can buy a t-shirt, and help us continue to help these amazing charities thrive. Love to you all, and let’s get talking about mental health."

Fans rushed to show their support to Tom on the post.

One wrote: "I think we all need a break from insta sometimes. See ya, Tom."

"Don't worry we understand but we also gonna miss you," a second said, while a third posted: "Proud of you Tom!"

Meanwhile, singer Justin Bieber added: "Love you man."

Tom and girlfriend Zendaya posted their first snap together in June (zendaya/instagram)

Tom has been busier than ever in recent years following a string of successful movies - including Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Whilst filming the popular superhero flick, the star also found love with co-star Zendaya.

Back in June, Zendaya seemingly made their romance 'Instagram official' as she posted a shot of herself and Tom on his birthday.

In a gushing tribute, she wrote: "Happiest of birthdays to the one who makes me the happiest."

It is thought the pair met for the first time when the were cast together on Spider-Man: Homecoming, in 2016.
