SPFL clubs to avoid wearing home shirts for homeless awareness as Neil Doncaster brands problem 'staggering'

The Daily Record is over the moon to support Shelter Scotland's #NoHomeKit campaign over the next weeks as housing and homelessness continues to present itself as a huge problem in the United Kingdom.

Football fans across Scotland will become aware of a seismic change over this week's fixture, with no clubs in the SPFL - the top four divisions of Scottish football - donning a home kit as part of Shelter Scotland's #NoHomeKit campaign. Shelter, a charity for homeless people, note that five households become homeless in Scotland every 90 minutes - meaning that in the space of just one football match, five households won't have anywhere to call home as the festive period gets underway.

With the cost of living crisis, many are at odds with further adversity due to the harsh weather that will impact families up and down the nation. As a result, Shelter's #NoHomeKit is a way at showing football fans the unfortunate circumstances that some families will have to endure over the winter weeks and beyond - by encouraging teams and fans to wear away and third kits to raise awareness for homelessness, alongside donating to the charity itself. Therefore, the SPFL have urged all clubs to wear their away or third kit for the December 23 and December 24 fixtures, which will see Celtic, Hibs and Motherwell don their away kits despite being on home turf.

The campaign follows on from the SWPL, with #NoHomeKit beginning on December 3 whilst the World Cup break was firmly underway. Neil Doncaster, SPFL CEO said: “We are delighted to support Shelter Scotland’s #NoHomeKit this season and are committed to helping this worsening problem in Scotland."

"The details of the growing housing crisis in this country are staggering and we are proud that we are able to help in some way. I can’t wait to see our clubs leave their home shirts at home for this historic round of fixtures.”

Last year, 261 clubs across England and Wales supported Shelter’s #NoHomeKit - and with the addition of the English Women's Super League alongside the SPFL and SWPL, more awareness is being spread across the United Kingdom. You can join in by sporting your away or third kit to a game you may be attending, whilst you can also donate £5 to Shelter by texting HOME to 70800.
