Speke kebab shop hit by critical safety rating for second time

A kebab shop in Speke has failed to up its game having been slapped with a second consecutive damning health and safety rating.

Speke Kebab House on Alderwood House has been given another zero out of five rating by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) having been visited by Liverpool Council safety officers last month. A report made available via the FSA identified that major and urgent improvements were necessary.

It is the second shocking report for the South Liverpool shop having been given an initial zero out of five rating in February 2020. That report came less than a year after Speke Kebab House was deemed to have improvements necessary and scored two out of five.

Urgent changes were needed in terms of the shop’s management of food safety, including its system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future. Hygiene also raised concerns with inspectors including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

On its website, Speke Kebab House describes itself “as a prime restaurant, we hold our standard upright to serve you best. We never compromise with the quality of food and each dish has been made with the best ingredients especially for your taste. So, you can expect only quality foods from our side.”

A Queens Drive takeaway has also come in for scalding criticism from the FSA, with Milano Pizza being scored zero out of five just two days before Speke Kebab House’s rating. Like the South Liverpool venue, urgent improvement is deemed to be necessary in terms of food safety management at Milano Pizza.

Hygienic food handling and the cleanliness and condition of the building on Queens Drive were said to need to shape up in last month’s rating. At its last inspection, Milano Pizza had been deemed to be “very good” and received five out of five in 2017.

It was a remarkable turnaround for the business that had received a one out of five rating from the officials inspecting the premises just 12 months previously. The ECHO approached both Milano Pizza and Speke Kebab House for comment.
