Spar, Centra and more Irish shops selling huge bags of food for just €4

The ongoing cost of living crisis has left many people across Ireland trying to cut costs and save money where possible.

One way to do so is with groceries, as shoppers can buy discounted food or items on special offer.

It comes as a new food app lets Irish customers buy food that is going to waste for cheap prices.

Shops including Spar and Centra are among hundreds of food businesses across Ireland that have partnered with the Too Good To Go app, which has already saved over 100,000 bags of food from going to waste.

It launched in Dublin last year and has since expanded to Limerick, Cork and Galway with hundreds of businesses signed up to offer ‘surprise bags’ filled with surplus food from restaurants, convenience retailers and producers for affordable prices.

Among them is Spar and Centra, with certain outlets offering huge bags of food for just €3.99.

The bags are filled with food products that are damaged or approaching their use-by date for as little as a few euros, which can be collected from stores.

Managing Director Sophie Trueman explained: “There are so many benefits to preventing delicious food from going to waste - retailers can recover their sunk costs, while consumers can access great food at an affordable price. Everyone wins and together we can do good for our planet too.

“I’m incredibly excited to see our food waste mission continue to grow in Ireland as we rescue even more great food from going to waste.”

Fresh the Good Food Market is among the retailers signed up to the app.

Managing Director of Fresh David Field said: “Too Good To Go forms part of our overall strategy to reduce our impact on climate change and using it has allowed us to have a real impact. As our name suggests, we have amazing fresh produce available every day.

“Too Good To Go allows us to minimise this food waste at store level, while also giving something back to our customers and delivering real value. Our partnership started in January of this year and it has been a huge success for us!”

People can download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses that offer unsold food, where they can then purchase a ‘Surprise Bag’ filled with delicious food at a third of its original retail value, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy.
