Spanish tourists issued with urgent warning as covid cases surge

The summer holidays have officially started for millions across the UK with Glasgow schools now out of session.

And with this year being the first where people are able to go abroad without any major restrictions in key tourist locations, many will be looking forward to seeing the sun and eating the local delicacies.

However, whilst people are packing to leave the country, cases in the UK are said to be surging. But it's not just here that we've seen a sudden rise in cases with Spain also seeing an increase in those testing positive.

The news comes as experts have warned Spanish tourists the country is now facing their seventh wave. However in some good news, almost no patients are being admitted to the ICU and no difference in severity has been noted in the new strains of B.A4 and B.A5.

According to the Irish Mirror, there has been a surge in infections over the past seven days with 68,186 cases reported to the Ministry of Health on Friday (June 24). People aged 80 and over are said to be the ones mainly becoming infected with the virus with over eight thousand patients being treated for covid in hospitals throughout Spain.

The number of cases increased by almost 20,000 from those recorded on the same day the week previous (48,272). The areas with the highest infection rates included Madrid, the Canary Islands and La Rioja. They once again have exceeded the 1000 case barrier.

Despite cases in these areas are rising, Andalucia remains at the bottom of the list with just 257.40 cases per 100,000 whilst while the Region of Murcia has seen a considerable increase to more than 500 cases.

In addition, the Valencian Community remains below the Spanish national average with 495.85 cases per 100,000.

Because of this, holidaymakers have now been urged to remain vigilant with experts warning two new strains of omicron have caused the current wave in Spain with the public being warned to ensure they are washing their hands and doing what they can to reduce transmitting the virus.
