Spanish superstar Juan Mata will not be returning to Melbourne Victory in a hammer blow to the club and the A-League Men competition.

The Victory confirmed Mata's playing career at the club would be a one-and-done affair in a statement on Friday afternoon, meaning the league is now without its biggest and most recognisable name.
