Spain wants EU holiday rule change so Brits can stay longer than 90 days

Sunny Spain has been a long-time favourite for British holidaymakers thanks to luscious heat, picturesque beaches and sparking sea. Plus, it's very easy to bag a bargain all-inclusive trip away at a number of popular resorts, despite the ongoing cost of living crisis.

However, Brexit is slowly but surely putting an end to cheap and cheerful jaunts across the channel for tourists, in-turn, making travel and tourism a little more difficult thanks to stringent EU rules in play.

As it stands, Spain wants to allow British holidaymakers to stay as long as they would like to according to reports - despite new EU rules standing in their way.

The Daily Star reports that Brits without a second passport are only allowed to stay in EU countries for 90 out of every 180 days. This has caused massive upheaval for those who were splitting their time between the UK and countries such as France and Spain.

Yet, Spanish tourism secretary Fernando Valdes has indicated that this could soon change. He has said the EU-wide rule is proving disadvantageous for his country as Spain relies heavily on tourism from UK holidaymakers.

Speaking to the i newspaper, Mr Valdes said: “Unfortunately, this is not something Spain has established by itself or can get rid of it. It is true that after Brexit some problems have emerged with people wanting to stay longer.”

He added: “It is in our interest to lobby and convince (the EU) we can try to work an exception with them. But the solution must come from them.”

Brits abroad on Spanish shores are a big deal for the tourism economy, spending close to €4.8 billion in the country last year alone. Spain also dropped the last of its Covid-19 rules affecting travel for UK holidaymakers recently.

Those planning on visiting should always check the entry rules and local requirements before departing on your holiday. You can check restrictions, warnings and current travel advice on the gov.uk website.
