Spain vs Austria LIVE: World Cup 2026 result, latest updates and fan reaction

Spain vs Austria LIVE

Spain are through to the last 16 of the World Cup after sweeping Austria aside 3-0 at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. The European champions arrived in Inglewood in good form, winning Group H after wins against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, and they were on song once more against Ralf Rangnick’s men.

Austria had finished second in Group J, but they were hugely outclassed by Luis de la Fuente’s side, as Mikel Oyarzabal netted a brace and Lamine Yamal starred off the right flank. Alex Baena cemented his starting berth in the absence of Nico Williams, who is a doubt for the remainder of the tournament after he suffered a muscle injury in the win over Uruguay.

Tottenham’s Pedro Porro added the second of the afternoon as former Chelsea and now-Real Madrid left-back Marc Cucurella delivered two exquisite assists, crossing for the right-back to nod home unmarked for 2-0. Spain will take on either Portugal or Croatia in the last 16, with the two sides going head to head in Toronto, Ontario later on Thursday night.

Nico Williams explains devastating injury blow

19:25 , Oli Gent

"Today is one of the worst days of my life," Williams said in a post on social media following the game against Uruguay.

"I'm injured again after a very complicated year, in which I fought many battles against a pubalgia, but won the war with sacrifice and most of all, responsibility.

"I overcame that injury, and then another one on my hamstring tested me again. Once more, I stopped smiling but I wasn't going to stop.

"Yesterday, I suffered another injury after a challenge by a fellow professional, driven by frustration, discontent, and sadness over his situation.

"It was a play that, in my opinion, could have been avoided because it was completely unnecessary."

Standard Sport prediction

18:00 , Oli Gent

Spain do not have a great record in World Cup knockout games, particularly since their triumph in 2010. So far this summer, they’ve not been at their best but still getting results and that’s all that matters in tournament football.

Expect Austria to put up a good fight but ultimately quality will tell and La Roja should get the win.

Spain to win, 2-0.
