Spain travel: The big Covid rule change that will make life easier for Irish tourists

Spain have lifted the requirements for anyone who is suffering from Covid-19 to get a test or to self-isolate.

The move came into effect overnight and is a major boost for tourists looking to jet off to the likes of Malaga, Barcelona or Madrid in the next few weeks.

The removal of compulsory quarantine for people in Spain means that people who test positive for Covid but have either no symptoms or only mild symptoms will not be mandated to quarantine for seven days, as was the case up until yesterday.

Spain is the first major EU country to do away with testing and mandatory quarantine.

Instead, public health experts are advising that any individuals showing mild symptoms:

  • limit their social interactions as much as possible.
  • Avoid having any contact with vulnerable individuals.
  • Wear a face mask at all times whenever they leave home.

However, the rules remain in place for anyone who is vulnerable, immunocompromised, pregnant, or over the age of 60.

The new rules will stay in place as long as the number of patients admitted to hospitals with Covid remains below 5%.

Previously, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, had said that his country would move from "managing a pandemic to managing a disease which we hope science will reclassify as an endemic illness"
