Spain hit with intense heatwave as tourists sizzle in 'extraordinary' temperatures

An intense heatwave has sent temperatures in Spain soaring, with tourists baking in 40C heat.

An African plume has sent temperatures spiking as holidaymakers are warned to take care in the sizzling heat.

Hotspots for tourists such as Madrid, Saville and Granada are all seeing scorching temperatures that are 16 degrees above normal for this time of year.

On Sunday afternoon, the country's national weather agency AEMET warned of high temperatures across 17 regions.

On Friday, the city of Jaén in Andalucía, southern Spain, recorded a temperature of 40.3C.

An AEMET spokesperson, Ruben del Campo, said: "This episode is very unusual for mid-May and could be one of the most intense episodes in the last 20 years."

The weekend was described as "extraordinarily warm" for May by AEMET, with early morning temperatures staying at 25C. The weather agency said this "is practically unheard of in the peninsula in May."

AEMET also said that the city of Segovia had experienced its first ever "tropical night" in May. This is a night where temperatures do not fall below 20C.

Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid were under a yellow alert, while Andalusia was placed under an orange alert.
