Spain heatwave warning for Brits as summer temperatures set to reach 40C

Brits heading on Spain holidays this summer are being warned of an upcoming heatwave which could see temperatures hitting 40C.

The Spanish Met Office, AEMET, has warned of a third heatwave and issued both yellow and amber warnings across mainland Spain, the Canaries and the Balearics.

Holiday hotspots in mainland Spain, Ibiza and Majorca are looking at temperatures of around 36-38C. Meanwhile, Gran Canaria is expected to see temperatures of up to 40C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Areas such as Catalonia and Valencia have been expected to face thunderstorms during the intense weather conditions.

The heatwave is expected to last until Thursday.

Health risk warnings have been extended in the Canaries (Westend61)

Those hoping for some relief from the heat at night will be disappointed; there is little reprieve with temperatures expected to stay at around 35C

According to The Canary News, the Canaries' Minister of Health has extended health warnings on the islands as a result of the rising temperatures.

As part of its existing travel advice, the Foreign Office has already been warning holidaymakers of the risk of forest fires resulting from high temperatures.

Its advice reads: "There is currently a heightened risk of forest fires due to exceptionally high temperatures in Spain. Take care when visiting or driving through woodland areas.

"Access to some areas such as natural parks and nature reserves may be limited or closed as a result. You should follow the instructions of local authorities and call 112 if you need emergency assistance. If you need urgent consular assistance you should call +34 91 714 6300."

Meanwhile, Brits heading to Spain this summer have already been warned of new air conditioning rules in the country that could leave them sizzling amid heat alerts.

A new law has been passed which means Spanish shops, offices and hospitality venues will no longer be able to set their cooling systems below 27C in the summer.

It forms part of a set of energy saving measures which also bans people from raising their heating to above 19C in the winter, reports Birmingham Live.
