Spain entry requirements: Updated list of all documents needed

Many families and individuals are heading overseas for their summer holidays. With that in mind, we've had a look for the latest requirements for entering one of the most popular tourism destinations for Brits.

Holidaymakers currently face more restrictions than ever when it comes to travelling. Following Brexit, new passport rules have been catching holidaymakers out, there are new regulations introduced by the Spanish ministry which mean border control could ask arrivals to prove they have enough money and a journey back, Chronicle Live reports.

At present, the majority of British tourists don't have to worry about yet is producing a visa. The country still permits visa-free access to British visitors for up to three months for tourism and business purposes.

Border checks for Spain

The Spanish Ministry says that all third countries - that's a country that is not a member of the EU, or country/territory whose citizens do not enjoy the EU right to free movement - must present proof of having sufficient financial means for the proposed stay or of the ability to legally obtain such means. In 2020, the minimum amount required is 90 euros per person per day.

In any case, and regardless of the length of stay, the traveller must have at least 810 euros or its equivalent in foreign currency. The proof of funds required by the Spanish authorities includes:

Cash
Traveller's cheques
Credit card with a statement
Up-to-date bank book
Bank letters or online bank statements will not be accepted

As well as proof of funds, travellers may be required to provide evidence of a booked return ticket and proof of accommodation. Officials will accept the confirmed reservation of an organised trip, proof of accommodation, or a letter of invitation from a private individual.

Passport requirements for Spain

Any British passport used for travel into Spain must be valid until three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen territory and must have been issued during the 10 years immediately before the date of entry. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Coronavirus requirements for Spain

The Foreign Office recommends that if you are travelling to Spain you must show valid proof of one of the following:

being fully vaccinated. Your vaccination status must meet the Spanish authorities’ validity period requirements and you must carry your NHS Covid pass as proof
a negative COVID-19 test: either a PCR taken within 72 hours prior to departure or an antigen test taken within 24 hours prior to departure
having recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months. You can use a medical certificate or recovery record to prove your COVID-19 status on entry to Spain.

These requirements do not apply to children under 12. If you are unvaccinated, passengers must complete a SPTH Health Control Form
