Spain block on EU travel plan puts half-term holidays in doubt for UK families

Half-term sunshine breaks are at risk for UK families after Spain rejected EU plans to streamline travel rules.

EU nations planned to introduce new regulations based on passenger vaccination or recovery status in an attempt to help families with single-jabbed children who have previously contracted the virus.

The NHS app will also be updated to allow children aged 12 to 15 to prove their vaccination status or confirm whether they have had a prior infection.

However, Spain is set to block the revised EU regulations and insist on full-vaccination status for all international visitors, including the UK.

The Spanish government has refused to accept proof of Covid recovery for entry threatening the holiday plans of thousands of families. It has stated that visitors must have received a final dose of the vaccine within 270 days of your arrival or show proof of a booster jab.

The new rules apply to all passengers who are aged 12 or over. Unvaccinated children and teenagers aged over 12 won't be able to visit for holidays, including half term.

The Spanish Tourist Office in the UK said: "Spain is in discussions with the EU and its partners about a possible review of the entry requirements for tourists from third countries with a view to making the current measures more flexible.

"The situation could change in the near future."

Before travel to Spain, all visitors must fill in and sign an online Health Control Form. On arrival passengers must show the QR code (hardcopy or digital) issued when completing the form.

From February 11, fully vaccinated arrivals in the UK will no longer need to take a coronavirus test, and the requirement for those not in that category to self-isolate will be dropped.
