Spain on Saturday began temporary border checks on travellers from Italy in response to Rome imposing similar measures at the end of July, after a mass migrant rush into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta.

The checks, which come "amid the persistent irregular migration pressure" facing Italy started at midnight on Saturday and will last until 7 September, Spain's interior ministry said in a statement on Friday.
