Spain and Portugal travel warning if you're visiting the islands

People with plans to travel to Spain and Portugal have been hit with a warning from the UK Foreign Office.

The government department updated its guidance for anyone from the UK who is due to visit either of the countries this week. It comes as Storm Oscar hits Western Europe, with the Canary Islands in particular set for some extreme weather.

Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Azores are also set for "heavy rain and strong winds", according to gov.uk.

Foreign Office advice warns those travelling to any of the islands: "There are weather warnings in place. You should check with your tour operator or accommodation provider before you travel and follow the instructions of local authorities."

The storm is likely to impact UK weather too. Graham Madge, a spokesman for the Met Office told the Mirror: “Currently in the UK we have a very large area of high pressure which is very dense descending air, and that’s what’s giving us our largely fine conditions that we’re having at the moment.

“Storm Oscar will be working its way north and will push against that area of high pressure but its progress will be slowed. The high pressure is very dense air and it's difficult to budge it effectively.”
