Souths shrug off latest stadium lock-out

The South Sydney playing group have shrugged off Venues NSW's decision to bar them from training at Allianz Stadium ahead of the stadium's first NRL match against the Sydney Roosters on Friday.

Earlier in the season, the Rabbitohs approached Venues NSW hoping to hold Thursday's captain's run at the Roosters' new home ground but were knocked back.

Club officials told AAP their second request to host a training session at Allianz Stadium was granted a month ago, only for the approval to be rescinded on the grounds the Roosters' NRLW team would be using the field at the same time.

The Roosters later relocated their session to Leichhardt Oval but when contacted by AAP, the club denied influencing Venues NSW's decision to lock their local rivals out.

News of the Rabbitohs' failed bid to secure a training session comes after the NSW Government blocked the club from relocating home games from Accor Stadium to Allianz Stadium from next season.

Souths captain Cameron Murray denied having any knowledge of the latest refusal but said the Rabbitohs were used to spending all week training at their spiritual home of Redfern Oval.

"That's the first I've heard of it," Murray told reporters.

"(But) we don't train at Accor Stadium before we play there.

"We're used to training here (at Redfern). We love training here."

Middle forward Siliva Havili said the side's preparations had not been hindered and that he looked forward to the historic game.

"We've been doing our captain's run (at Redfern Oval) the whole season," he told reporters.

"It's exciting. I drove past (Allianz Stadium) the other day. It's slick.

"Hopefully a good crowd turns up and we can put on a show."

Havili could start at hooker in place of Damien Cook, whose availability hinges on changes to COVID-19 isolation guidelines that may be announced after national cabinet meets on Wednesday.

Cook has been in isolation since testing positive on Saturday but would be released in time to play the Roosters if Premier Dominic Perrottet reduces the mandatory isolation period from seven days to five.

"We'll see what happens with Cookie and make a call on Thursday," Havili said.

Rabbitohs superstar Latrell Mitchell was given the day off from training on Tuesday to have some downtime on his farm on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Blake Taaffe deputised at fullback in his absence but Murray said Mitchell and the rest of the big-name Rabbitohs would likely line up on Friday if fit, despite speculation players could be rested ahead of the finals.

"We've seen over the last couple of weeks how important it is to get key players in the right positions building confidence and combinations," Murray said.

"Coming into some big games in the next couple of weeks, I think it's important to get some practise in there.

"You want your best players out there."
