Southport declared 'England's classic resort' during Trooping the Colour

The people of Southport were "made proud" when their town received a mention during the BBC's national coverage of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

As they watched the BBC's jubilee coverage of the Horse Guards Parade, or "Trooping the Colour", yesterday, people living in Southport were delighted to see their town praised by one young man as presenters interviewed crowds gathered on the Mall of Buckingham Palace. The man, from Southport himself, called the town "England's classic resort" as he was attending what is considered the opening ceremony to the palace's Jubilee celebrations.

When asked why he had attended by BBC news presenter Reeta Chakrabarti, the man said: "I'm here celebrating the occasion. It's nice bringing communities together and we're all here- that's why I'm here". Then, when Reeta asked where he was from, he said "All the way from Southport, England's classic resort. I'm just soaking [the celebrations] all up, making the most of it."

Seeing their town recognised for its roots brought pride to many of those who call Southport their home. Taking to social media they celebrated the nod.

One woman posted: "Nice to hear somebody praising Southport. Too many negative comments usually."

Another person said: "What a fantastic moment! It made me smile and be proud to be a Sandgrounder. Well done him!"

Their sentiments were echoed by many. One person said: "Great interview, well done young man. Proud of our town."

One man said: "Well done that man!

Another man said: "Well done to him. Great answer" followed by five clapping emojis, applauding the young man for his answer.

The search was then on for the identity of the man who had represented their town so admirably. Many thought they recognised him, but were shot down by friends who they had tagged to confirm.

A woman said: "Have we tracked him down yet? Someone must know who he is.

One man posted: "Who is he ??? Name please. No one seems have it ??"

As of this afternoon the search is still on for the identity of the young man.
