Southern Regional College to carry out internal investigation after nine students fall ill at campus

Southern Regional College has confirmed they are conducting an internal investigation after nine students from a Co Armagh secondary school fell ill at their campus on Friday.

Emergency Services were called to the scene at the Armagh at just before 1pm on November 18 following reports a number of students had taken ill and needed medical attention.

All those affected were students at Markethill High School, who attend the college one day per week for vocational programmes.

Brian Doran, Chief executive of the college, said the college intends to conduct their own investigations to ascertain what happened.

"They were taken to hospital as a result of staff acting when one or more students fell ill," he told BBC NI.

"The college liaised with the school. The school had staff on premises. We worked with the school staff to inform parents, and the emergency services were on hand fairly quickly.

"The concern was to get the students medical treatment as quickly as possible, which thankfully they did."

"We'll carry on our own investigations with the school early next week to try and ascertain what was the nature of the incident," added Mr Doran.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said: "NIAS despatched two emergency crews, an intermediate care crew and two ambulance officers to the incident.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, nine patients were taken, by ambulance, to Craigavon Area Hospital."

Mr Doran confirmed that he understood all students have since recovered.
