Southampton vs Newcastle United: Premier League preview

Newcastle United are in great fettle ahead of their long trip to the South Coast and are looking for win number seven of their Premier League campaign.

It's just one win in eight matches for the Saints who now sit fourth bottom of the table with Ralph Hasenhuttl fighting for his future. United will be the favourites for three points but Southampton have still claimed draws at home to West Ham, Arsenal and Leeds and beaten Chelsea at St Mary's this term.

Lee Ryder's prediction

It's hard to see past a Newcastle away win here given the confidence, organisation and flair around Eddie Howe's team at the moment. Throw in the fact Southampton have conceded 20 goals already this season and you'd expect some gaps in the home defence.

Hasenhuttl can't make his mind up between a 4-4-2 formation or a 4-3-2-1 system but Newcastle are a team in which everybody knows their roles. They went for the jugular at Spurs, took the game to them and won last time out on the road, and I expect something similar here.

Whether we will see anything as spectacular as a back-heel Bruno volley remains to be seen, but you never know!

Referee

Stuart Attwell (Warwickshire)

The man in the middle has issued 37 yellow cards and two red this season.
