Northern Ireland teenager Matt Carson has spoken of his 'pride' after signing his first professional contract with Southampton.

The Saints announced the deal which will tie Carson down to the club until June 2024.

Carson was part of Southampton's side that won the Under-18 Premier League title last season, with his performances earning him a move up to the B team.

The teenage defender has just returned to action following a long-term injury, coinciding with his new deal.

Carson shared news of the contract on his Twitter account, saying: "Proud moment, time to push on."

He added on Southampton's website: "This is something I’ve dreamt of since I started playing football so to finally sign feels good.

“It was an easy decision, the club have been great. The whole way through my injury yet again they’ve helped a lot and they offered me a new deal which gave me a clear head to focus on getting back.”
