A town centre strategy plan for Blantyre has been approved by South Lanarkshire councillors.
At the community and enterprise resources committee meeting on October 4, elected members gave the green light to an action plan for the town.
Proposals for Blantyre are the last in a rolling programme of four town centre strategies for Hamilton, Larkhall and Cambuslang.
The strategy for Blantyre aims to work with local businesses and communities to create a dynamic action plan to tackle issues within the town and help to repurpose them for the future.
The plans have been completed in consultation with Scotland’s Towns Partnership and has helped to inform the strategies and action plan along with a specifically designed community engagement and consultation process in Blantyre.
The consultation feedback showed positive support for the priorities and actions set out in the strategy for the town centre.
The Blantyre Town Centre Strategy and Action plan outlines a range of initiatives which the council will carry out with partners to support the vitality of the town centre.
The private sector will hold a key role in providing shopping services and leisure offers that will attract and meet the needs of locals.
The action plan will be a live document with projects and priorities being delivered on an ongoing basis.
Chair of the Community and Enterprise Resources committee, Robert Brown (Rutherglen South), praised the report, he said: “This is a very interesting report, it’s interesting to note some of the strong points in Blantyre.”
Councillor Maureen Chalmers (Blantyre), echoed those comments, and said: “I want to welcome the report and thank the officers because this report has been a labour of love.
"We started with our first meeting in March 2020 so there’s been lots of stops and starts outside our control.
"So thanks to the team who have carried out the work and the local businesses and community who participated.”
