A lecturer and a student at South Lanarkshire College have snapped up a prestigious award in their respective fields.
Beauty Therapy lecturer Dawn Paterson Ross won both the regional Southwest and National awards for 'Semi Permanent Makeup Specialist of the Year' at the Scottish Makeup Awards 2023, whilst
Dawn, who has been a lecturer at the college since 2009 and runs her own business, Dawn Paterson Ross Permanent Makeup & Scalp Artist, in Saltcoats, has spoken on how chuffed she is at winning.
She said: “I love working with clients and seeing their faces when they are delighted with the results, so I was on cloud nine when I heard about the Make-up Artistry award nomination. I just did not expect it.
“I’d heard in December that I was a finalist in the competition - apparently, they scout your work, and clients nominate you.
“The winners were decided by industry experts and public votes, alongside ‘supporting evidence’ such as client feedback”.
The makeup artist attended the awards at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Sunday, February 19, with her win coming as no shock to her Curriculum manager, Joanne Warwick, who said: “We were delighted when we heard about Dawn’s nomination, and were absolutely blown away when we heard she had won.
“Her win came as no surprise to her colleagues and students at South Lanarkshire College though, as Dawn is a truly inspiring lecturer, she is always ahead of the curve with new ideas and concepts for teaching in the classroom and her continuing professional development in new fields, is truly inspiring to her students”.
South Lanarkshire College Roofing Occupations apprentice Sean Comaskey is also celebrating success after winning the prestigious Cupa Pizarras Slate Apprentice of the Year award 2022.
The Glasgow-based apprentice, who studies at South Lanarkshire College East Kilbride, and is employed by C Hanlon Facilities Management Limited, said: “I am proud to win this award. Throughout my apprenticeship, I have progressed quickly, and I am dramatically improving my trade skills daily.
“I am really enjoying the apprenticeship, which involves a mix of working onsite with my employer, and learning skills from lecturers in the classroom at college.
“My advice to anyone thinking about embarking on a trade apprenticeship would be, to give it a go, you will gain great experience, and you will have the opportunity to earn while you learn.”
Sean’s employer C Hanlon spoke of his delight at Sean’s achievement, he stated: “On behalf of C Hanlon Facilities Management Limited, I would like to congratulate Sean, for all the hard work and effort he has put in to achieve this prestigious award.
“Sean was chosen for his hard work and dedication over the first year of his apprenticeship, and for becoming so skilled in his trade. Sean’s a worthy winner, and the accolade reflects the enthusiasm and work ethic he has daily, as he carries out his workload at college and for the company”.
