South Ayrshire Council forced to clear giant 'jungle' beside new Ayr sports arena

The great clean-up has begun after council chiefs inadvertently created a giant jungle in the heart of a busy neighbourhood.

Ayrshire Live told last month how blundering local authority bosses established a 100-metre 'no-man's land' beside the new Craigie Sports Arena.

The area – caught between homes and the new stadium – was filled with eight-foot high undergrowth.

Residents say they had warned South Ayrshire Council of the need to hack back the weeds before they erected perimiter fencing at the new £8.5 million complex.

However, the project went ahead despite the warnings, sparking fury from neighbours.

Now, after the issue was highlighted by Ayrshire Live, council bosses have sent in a team of contractors to clear the area ahead of the arena's grand opening next month.

Andrew Bryden, whose daughter lives in nearby Craigie Way, said: "The council were repeatedly asked not to erect the new boundary fence before they had attended to the situation on the land owned by them.

"It beggars belief that they could have this pointed out to them and still press ahead anyway.

"But it is good that common sense has finally prevailed after some public pressure was brought to bear."
