South Ayrshire Conservatives unveil team of 18 candidates to stand in May's council elections

A former Premier League footballer, an ex-air steward and a B&B boss are to spearhead the Tories' bid for power on South Ayrshire Council.

The current opposition have this week unveiled 18 candidates who will go to the ballot box in May's elections.

And party chief Martin Dowey insists his team is "better prepared than ever" to take back control at County Buildings.

Councillor Dowey has pledged to scrap a range of controversial projects if he is voted into power, such as the building of a £45 million leisure centre in Ayr town centre.

And he claims his assembled team contains the "right mix" to sweep back to power in less than five months.

He said: "We have 18 strong candidates across all wards who will take our message to the people of South Ayrshire.

"Voters are sick and tired of their voices being blatantly ignored by the current council administration.

"You only have to look at the proposed leisure centre as an example of a vanity project which nobody wants – yet the views of thousands of people in this community count for nothing.

"We will ensure that is not the case if voted into office this May."

Cllr Dowey has also pledged the Tories will save Ayr's Riverside high flats, which council chiefs want demolished.

Among his team lined up for May is Ayr United coach Derek Stillie, who will bid to win a seat in the hotly-contested Prestwick ward.

David Paterson, who runs the Beechwood bed and breakfast on Prestwick Road, will stand in North Ayr.

Rose Hall, who spent her childhood in foster care, will aim for election in Troon, while former cabin crew member Gavin Scott will target the South Carrick seat.

Cllr Dowey added: "We've got a broad range of candidates who all bring something to the table.

"Derek is already experienced in elections and a well-known figure in the area who would be a real asset to the people of Prestwick.

"David has lived with his wife and children in Newton-on-Ayr for 20 years and is desperate to give something back now.

"And Rose is very honest and open about her background where she spent her childhood being passed all around social work and foster care system but it has given her a resilience and strength which will be vital to my team going forward."
