Rhett Halkett will replace Katrina Powell as Hockeyroos coach after the former South African international was awarded a one-year deal.
The 39-year-old played 155 matches for his country, including against the Kookaburras at the 2012 Olympics.
Since retiring six years ago he's worked as an assistant coach for the Netherlands women's and the Indian men's teams, helping them to gold in Tokyo and bronze in Paris respectively.
