Nigeria survived a second-half scare to overcome Tanzania in their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 opener as they look to put their World Cup qualifying woes behind them.
Semi Ajayi’s header broke the deadlock nine minutes before half-time, the Hull City centre-back finding the target after Nigeria’s strike partnership of Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams saw chances go begging.
Tanzania then drew level after the break through Charles M'Mombwa before Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead just two minutes later with a wicked strike into the top corner.
The Super Eagles, who came so close last time out in the 2-1 final defeat to Ivory Coast, very nearly conceded another equaliser at the death as Ibrahim Hamad sliced his volley over from close range, but Eric Chelle’s side were able to see out the result in Fes to get their Afcon campaign off to a winning start ahead of Group C’s second match between Tunisia and Uganda later in the night.

Report: Ademola Lookman strike earns Nigeria nervy victory after Tanzania scare in Afcon opener
20:03 , Will CastleAdemola Lookman scored a superb second-half winner as Nigeria earned a nervy Africa Cup of Nations victory over Tanzania in their Group C opener in Fes.
Getting over the line in the pouring rain, it positive start for the tournament runners-up from two years ago, but one that was not without moments of alarm.
Nigeria were more dominant than the scoreline suggests in terms of possession and chances, but they failed to finish off the contest and were almost made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal by their east African opponents.
Semi Ajayi headed Nigeria in front in the first half before Charles M'Mombwa equalised five minutes after halftime. The Tanzanians' joy lasted only two minutes, however, as Lookman fired in what proved to be the winner from outside the box.

Nigeria survive Tanzania scare to start Afcon in winning fashion
19:35 , Will Castle

FULL-TIME! Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:27 , Will CastleNigeria survived a second-half scare to overcome Tanzania in their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 opener as they look to put their World Cup qualifying woes behind them.

FULL-TIME! Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:23 , Will CastleThe Super Eagles get it done in their Afcon opener!
It’s not a statement win, but it’s three big points.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:22 , Will Castle90+4 mins: It’s played short and the eventual delivery comes to nothing.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:22 , Will Castle90+3 mins: Nigeria concede a free-kick just inside their half. One last chance to launch it into the box for Tanzania.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:21 , Will Castle90+2 mins: Nigeria are doing exactly what they should be right now - ticking it around the back, slowing the game down.
One more minute to get through for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:20 , Will Castle90+1 mins: One last roll of the dice for Tanzania as Denis comes on for goalscorer M’Mombwa.
Three minutes added on.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:18 , Will Castle88 mins: CHANCE! Two MASSIVE opportunities for Tanzania to equalise!
Hussein breaks down the left and delivers a low cross aiming for John at the back post, and while Bassey and Nwabali cross wires, the Fulham centre-back is able to swipe the ball away from the Tanzania attacker and out for a corner.
It’s pinball stuff from the corner, with the ball bouncing around before breaking to Hamad. However, he completely scuffs it from close range and fires over!
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:16 , Will Castle86 mins: Bassey slides in through the wet grass to tackle and is caught on the way through by his opponent’s studs.
As he receives treatment, Osimhen’s number goes up. He’s replaced by former Southampton striker Onuachu - the absolutely massive one.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:14 , Will Castle85 mins: A half chance for Tanzania goes begging as John gets in a shooting position on the edge of the box but can only fire wide.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:13 , Will Castle82 mins: CHANCE! Another Nigeria cross aims for Osimhen, who controls and holds up the before his attempted shot breaks to a teammate on the right of the six-yard box.
Foba gets out quickly to get a foot in and is hurt in the process. He’s not been afraid to put his body on the line tonight.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:11 , Will Castle81 mins: Free-kick opportunity for Tanzania doesn’t develop into anything as it’s headed out to centre-back Hussein, who sends his shot from 35 yards out to the moon.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:09 , Will Castle79 mins: Two more changes for Tanzania.
Rochdale’s Allarakhia’s race is run as he is replaced by Job, while Kapombe makes way for Salford City’s Mnoga.
One English lower league star enters as the other departs.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:08 , Will Castle78 mins: This one’s got a bit cagey in the last few minutes, with neither side able to enjoy much of the ball in each other’s final third.
Nigeria won’t mind that.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
19:04 , Will Castle73 mins: Nigeria are searching for that third goal, knowing that a two-goal advantage will surely take this out of sight for Tanzania at this stage.
But as they enjoy sustained pressure and pepper Foba’s box with crosses, Tanzania are defending well and not letting shots get off.
With this scoreline, there will always be a tinge of precariousness.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
18:58 , Will Castle67 mins: CLOSE! Great work from Simon, going inside and outside of his opposite number before laying it into Iwobi’s path for the Fulham man to let fly.
He aims for the top left corner but shoots just too high.
As the game gets back underway, Osimhen is soon slipped in for another chance but his effort can’t trouble Foba.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
18:53 , Will Castle64 mins: Time for Tanzania to switch things up going forward as they replace Msuva for John.
They’re probing the Nigeria box and have won a couple of corners in succession.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
18:50 , Will Castle61 mins: SAVE! Lookman forces another big save out of Foba as his effort takes a wicked deflection and requires the keeper to tip over the bar.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
18:49 , Will Castle59 mins: Changes in the offing for Nigeria as Chukwueze and Adams make way in place of Simon and Dele-Bashiru.
The Super Eagles need to take back control of this game - it’s a bit too frantic from Eric Chelle’s at the moment.
But for the neutral, it’s great stuff.
Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania
18:45 , Will Castle54 mins: CLOSE! What a start to this second half - and suddenly this is an end-to-end contest.
Nigeria once again leave the man at the back unmarked as Allarakhia brings it down and fires across the box.
It deflects to a Tanzania player in the middle of the box but his poked effort can only roll agonisingly wide.
This is explosive stuff.
GOAL! Nigeria 2-1 Tanzania (Lookman, 52')
18:41 , Will CastleAnd just like that, the Super Eagles have their lead back!
Lookman takes matters into his own hands and blasts a beautiful left-footed effort into the far corner from outside the box.
GOAL! Nigeria 1-1 Tanzania (M'Mombwa, 50')
18:40 , Will CastleTanzania snatch a shock equaliser!
A delightful lift over the top is latched onto by M’Mombwa, who hasn’t been tracked by a Nigeria defender.
He controls it and slips past Nwabali to draw Tanzania on terms!
NO GOAL! Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:37 , Will Castle46 mins: Osimhen audaciously flicks the ball into the net inside a minute the restart - but as he wheels away in celebration, he sees the offside flag is up!
VAR are checking it but replays indicate the linesman was correct.
Either way, that was some finish.
BACK UNDERWAY! Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:35 , Will CastleThe players are back out into the rain... and we’re off again!
HALF-TIME! Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:30 , Will Castle

HALF-TIME! Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:24 , Will CastleNigeria are in control of their Afcon opener as they lead Tanzania at the break in Fes.
Hull centre-back Semi Ajayi’s header is proving the difference so far, finding the target after Nigeria’s strike partnership of Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams saw chances go begging.
Tanzania aren’t out of this yet, however, with winger Tarryn Allarakhia among those to ask questions of Nigeria stopper Stanley Nwabali.

HALF-TIME! Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:20 , Will CastleAnd there’s the whistle!
Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:20 , Will Castle45+1 mins: DOUBLE SAVE! Two huge stops from Foba to keep the deficit at just one.
Ndidi launches a piledriver towards the bottom-right corner, forcing a low save from the Tanzania stopper, but the chance stays alive through Chukwueze.
He dances in the box before firing goalwards, with his deflected looping effort requiring another good stop from Foba to tip it over.
From the corner, Osimhen goes for the bicycle kick and gets it on target, but this one is more comfortable for Foba who holds.
What an end to the half!
Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:18 , Will Castle45 mins: Another moment for Tanzania as a threatening cross flashes in front of Nwabali’s goal before running away from yellow shirts for the Nigeria goalkeeper to pick up.
The rain is really pouring now. One minute added on.
Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania
18:15 , Will Castle42 mins: Tanzania show signs that they can fashion an equaliser as Rochdale’s Allarakhia gets it on his right and tries bending it past Nwabali.
The Nigeria stopper doesn’t take it cleanly but collects the spill to ensure no damage is done.
GOAL! Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania (Ajayi, 36')
18:09 , Will CastleIt had been coming!
Nigeria go short from the corner and Iwobi eventually dinks a very inviting cross, which is met by centre-back Ajayi who powers his header past Foba to break the deadlock.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
18:08 , Will Castle35 mins: OFF THE LINE! Osimhen goes round the keeper and this time gets a shot off, but Mwamnyeto is there to clear on the line!
Tanzania survive - for now.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
18:05 , Will Castle32 mins: CHANCE! A lovely ball from Iwobi sends Osimhen chasing the ball down but as he tries to knock the ball around Foba, his touch lets him down, taking him far too wide to even attempt to fire goalwards.
He tries to keep it alive with the cross but it’s cleared by Tanzania.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
18:02 , Will Castle29 mins: A lot of jostling in the box delays the taking of the corner with the referee persistently intervening.
It’s eventually whipped in and Adams absolutely clatters into Foba leaping for the ball, committing a foul and leaving the Tanzania stopper in pain.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:59 , Will Castle26 mins: Free-kick opportunity for Nigeria after Osimhen was dragged down by a Tanzania defender.
Lookman is standing over it... he fires and it deflects wide.
Corner for Nigeria to come.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:55 , Will Castle22 mins: Nigeria are peppering the Tanzania box with crosses at the moment, with Foba being required to flap his gloves at a couple of dangerous deliveries to prevent Osimhen from getting on the end of them.
This is Tanzania goalkeeper Foba’s first international appearance of his career, by the way. Dropped right in the deep end.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:53 , Will Castle21 mins: Commentary reveals that the rain is beginning to come down heavier and heavier, which could pose some damp conditions that prove difficult for goalkeepers.
Should we expect some long-range efforts?
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:48 , Will Castle16 mins: Another pacey break from Nigeria sees Osimhen slipped through down the right before blasting goalwards, but he fires high and wide.
The offside flag then goes up but replays show he was in line.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:46 , Will Castle14 mins: A sight of goal for Tanzania now as they work it in behind the Nigeria defence before getting a shot off, but it’s straight at Nwabali.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:45 , Will Castle11 mins: OFF THE BAR! And it’s even closer from the corner that resulted from that save!
Chukwueze whips in a wonderful delivery and while it’s Fulham teammate Bassey that rises, it looks like the header comes off Adams as the ball ricochets off the crossbar.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:42 , Will Castle9 mins: CHANCE! First big chance of the game comes Nigeria’s way!
Adams is slipped into the box and tries to drive around the goalkeeper, but Foba stays with him and dives down to deny the Sevilla striker.
Foba is now receiving treatment for an injury he sustained while making the save.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:41 , Will Castle8 mins: Tanzania have a free-kick opportunity but it’s well collected by Nwabali, who is quick off his line to claim the lofted ball.
Up the other end, Sanusi feels hard done by not to have won a corner - and replays show he might have a point.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:38 , Will Castle5 mins: Chukwueze fires from range and it’s an awkward one for Foba, bouncing right in front of his feet as he comes to collect.
It bobbles a bit out of his hands but he manages to control the spill.
Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:34 , Will Castle1 min: A loose ball is pounced on by Lookman and Nigeria’s stacked attack looks to strike early, bombing forward before Osimhen is slipped wide.
The striker tries to dink a cross towards Adams but the delivery is dealt with and cleared.
KICK-OFF! Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania
17:32 , Will CastleAfter a prolonged Nigeria huddle, we are underway in Fes!
Anthems echo around Fez Stadium
17:29 , Will CastleThe anthems fade, hands shake and eyes lock in. Kick-off is next.
Closing in on kick-off
17:25 , Will CastleWe are just moments away from kick-off in Fes as Nigeria take on Tanzania in their Group C opener.
Here come the teams - anthems up next!
Who is Tarryn Allarakhia?
17:21 , Will CastleThe majority of Tanzania’s starting line-up play club football in their homeland, but would you be surprised to hear that their left-winger plies his trade for National League leaders Rochdale?
Tarryn Allarakhia, born in Redbridge in London, has spent his career bouncing around the lower leagues of English football and after stints at the likes of Crawley, Colchester and Leyton Orient, he has found his home at Spotland over the past couple of years and is helping Dale’s bid to get promoted back to the Football League this season.
Not often do National League teams need to contend with players leaving on international duty, but after declaring for Tanzania last year, the 28-year-old finds himself in the thick of their Afcon plans!

Why is the Africa Cup of Nations taking place over Christmas?
17:16 , Jamie BraidwoodThe Africa Cup of Nations kicked off in Morocco on Sunday 21 December, with the final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat to be played on Sunday 18 January - far earlier than when held at this time of the calendar than in previous years.
The 35th edition of the biennial tournament was initially set to be played in July and August 2025, in order to reduce disruption with the European football season.
But the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations is, once again, a talking point - which is unfair to the tournament itself as it becomes squeezed by club football’s endless expansion.
The Africa Cup of Nations was moved to begin in December in order to make room for the expanded Club World Cup, which featured 32 teams for the first time and took place in the United States between June and July earlier this year.
On the other side, the conclusion of the new Champions League league phase in January, which features an additional two matches, forced an earlier start to Afcon and for the tournament to be played over Christmas and the New Year period for the first time.

Why is the Africa Cup of Nations taking place over Christmas?
Remember Ally Samatta?
17:12 , Will CastleThe most recognisable face on Tanzania’s team sheet will no doubt be striker Ally Samatta, who spent a few not-so-memorable months at Aston Villa in 2020.
After an impressive four-year stint at Belgian side Genk, Samatta joined the then relegation-threatened Villains in the winter transfer window of the 2019/20 season for a fee of £8.5m.
He went on to score on his league debut, a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, notably becoming the first player from Tanzania to play - and subsequently score - in the Premier League.
Despite the bright start, he only scored one more goal for Villa during his stay - which, to be fair, came at Wembley in a 2-1 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.
He would move to Fenerbahce on loan later in the year, which proved the end of his stay at Villa Park as he later joined the Turkish giants permanently.
Short but sweet, you could say.
Patson Daka's terrifying celebration botch
17:07 , Will CastlePatson Daka produced one of the more dramatic moments of Afcon so far when he headed Zambia level in stoppage time to seal a 1-1 draw against Mali in their Group A opener.
The Leicester City striker, who has previously played in the Premier League, ran off with his teammates and attempted to do an acrobatic celebration.
However, his effort went badly wrong as he landed on his neck while attempting an acrobatic flip.
Luckily, he was able to get up largely unscathed and finish the match after his awkward landing.

All over in Tangier
17:03 , Will CastleSenegal have made an early statement in their bid to win a second Afcon title of their history, dominating Botswana to a 3-0 win.
Nicolas Jackson bagged two either side of half-time before Cherif Ndiaye put the icing on the cake in the 90th minute.
They go level on points with DR Congo in Group D, who beat Benin 1-0 earlier today. Those two will meet on Saturday in what will be a mini cup final to effectively decide who tops the group.

Nigeria's stacked attack
16:58 , Will CastleIf there’s one thing you can’t question about this Nigeria side, it’s their attacking firepower.
Victor Osimhen’s goalscoring exploits are undeniable, boasting 12 in 16 this season for Galatasaray after hitting 37 last season. The former Napoli man always has European giants circling but for now, it seems he’s happy to take his gargantuan weekly cheque in Turkey.
But with Osimhen comes Atalanta’s 2024 Europa League hero Ademola Lookman, Fulham’s electric duo Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi, giant Sevilla striker Akor Adams as well as full-back pairing Bright Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi, both of whom like to go forward.
When Nigeria are playing, expect goals.

CONFIRMED NIGERIA TEAM NEWS!
16:48 , Will CastleLike London buses!
It’s a predictably forward-thinking Nigeria line-up that includes Galatasaray sharpshooter Victor Osimhen up top, accompanied by Akor Adams, with Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman in support.
Chukwueze’s Fulham teammates Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey also start, while former Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi captains the side.

Nigeria looking to put World Cup woes behind them
16:37 , Will CastleIt’s not been a pleasant few months for Nigerian football, whose recent times have been defined by their ultimately unsuccessful bid to save their World Cup qualifying campaign.
Despite scraping into the CAF play-offs in the qualifier before snatching a dramatic extra-time victory over Gabon in the semi-final, Nigeria succumbed to DR Congo on penalties, meaning they will go two successive World Cups without an appearance.
Their problem throughout qualifying was too often the failure to turn draws into wins, something that cost them top spot in their group and forced them down the perilous play-off route.
Afcon gives the Super Eagles a shot at restoring pride - will they take it?

Senegal double their lead
16:28 , Will CastleAfcon title hopefuls Senegal look to have already got the job done in Tangier as Nicolas Jackson produced a composed finish to double their lead and his own tally against Botswana, making it 2-0.
In fact, the Bayern Munich striker could’ve just notched his hat-trick as he beared down on goal, only to see his effort tipped around the post.
Team news coming up
16:20 , Will CastleWe should be expecting team news to be revealed in the next 10 or so minutes.

Nigeria vs Tanzania: Who are the ones to watch?
16:15 , Will CastleOn paper, this afternoon’s meeting in Fes is something of a mismatch.
Nigeria are without question the stronger team and go into the tournament as one of the title hopefuls, with their attacking firepower arguably the best in the competition.
Galatasaray marksman Victor Osimhen will lead from the front but will be supported by the likes of Atalanta star Ademola Lookman and dangerous Fulham winger Samuel Chukwueze, with his Whites teammates Alex Iwobi also providing a creative threat from deeper.
And while much of the Tanzania squad won’t be recognised by the average Premier League fan, there are a few names that have penetrated the English game.
Ally Samatta spent a few months at Aston Villa in 2020 and is currently at Ligue 1 club Le Havre. Meanwhile, in the lower leagues, pacey winger Tarryn Allarakhia currently plies his trade for National League leaders Rochdale, and Haji Mnoga has been at League Two side Salford City since August 2024.

State of play in Senegal vs Botswana
16:13 , Will CastleIn the precursor to this afternoon’s clash between Nigeria and Tanzania, Senegal currently lead Botswana 1-0 in Tangier.
Nicolas Jackson’s 40th-minute goal is currently proving the difference, with the game about five minutes into the second half.

Mohamed Salah resumes role as Egypt's eternal hero
16:00 , Will CastleCometh the hour, cometh the man.
Mohamed Salah snatched a dramatic stoppage-time winner last night as Egypt came from behind to beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in their first fixture at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Egypt captain, starting his first game after four successive matches on the bench at Liverpool, fired home a left-footed effort in the 91st minute to earn the seven-times champions a late victory after Zimbabwe had stunned them by going ahead in the first half.

Today's order of play
15:30 , Will CastleAfcon is into its third day of action with all eyes on who will strike the first blows in Group C and D.
The afternoon kicked off with Group D’s opener as DR Congo dispatched Benin 1-0 thanks to Spartak Moscow winger Theo Bongonda’s 16th-minute strike. The game included VAR controversy involving a disallowed goal for Real Betis veteran Cedric Bakambu, before the technology system went out of action for a period of the second half.
We’re now about half an hour into our second Group D game of the day, with title contenders Senegal taking on Botswana in Tangier.
Then it’s to Group C, with Nigeria looking to start their conquest of Africa in flying fashion against Tanzania from 5:30pm - we’ll bring you all the action from that one, right here.
And to finish off the evening, Group C’s second outing contends Tunisia and Uganda in Rabat, kicking off at 8pm.

Nigeria vs Tanzania live
14:30 , Will CastleNigeria face Tanzania in their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 opener looking to put World Cup 2026 qualifying heartbreak behind them.
The Super Eagles will hope to conquer Africa after going so close last time out in the 2-1 final defeat to Ivory Coast.
Despite surviving CAF qualifying and then snatching a dramatic extra-time victory over Gabon in the playoff semi-final, Nigeria succumbed to DR Congo on penalties, meaning two successive World Cups without an appearance.
