South Africa has taken a strong stance at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by seeking an emergency halt to Israel's offensive in the southern city of Rafah. This move comes after South Africa filed proceedings at the ICJ accusing Israel of genocide.
During a public hearing at the ICJ, South Africa's delegation expressed grave concerns over Israel's escalating attacks in Gaza, which they claim are in defiance of the court's orders. The South African ambassador to the Netherlands, Vusi Madonsela, highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that Israel's actions have reached a 'new and horrific stage' of genocide.
While the focus of the hearing was on the recent offensive in Rafah, South Africa emphasized that Israel's attacks have been intensifying all over the Gaza Strip in recent weeks. The delegation argued that these actions have not only violated the court's orders but have also 'shocked the conscience of humanity.'
Madonsela pointed out that South Africa is once again compelled to seek intervention from the ICJ due to the ongoing annihilation of the Palestinian people, with a reported death toll of over 35,000 and significant destruction in Gaza.
Israel will have the opportunity to respond during the two-day hearing to address the emergency measures proposed by South Africa. In a previous ruling in January, the ICJ had ordered Israel to take all necessary steps to prevent genocidal acts and facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza, although it did not mandate a ceasefire.
