Souness issues firm response after Rangers fans confront Tavernier & Clement

Graeme Souness has demanded Rangers fans who confronted James Tavernier and Philippe Clement "calm down".

The Ibrox hero blasted the heavy criticism aimed at the Rangers manager and captain after the 3-0 loss to Celtic.

Clement and Tavernier faced seething supporters back at Ibrox after the derby defeat at Celtic Park.

The Belgian manager had attempted to defend the performance as he pointed to stats from the match before continuing to walk past the angry supporters.

Tavernier, meanwhile, faced a barrage of abuse from one fan who branded him a "loser" and told him to "f*** off".

The supporter shouted: "Embarrassing, f****** embarrassing. Where the f**** the captain? Where are you, Tav?

"Absolutely embarrassing Tav. Tav, do us a favour and just f*** off, eh?

"Just f*** off, you're f****** embarrassing. You're nothing but a f****** loser, mate."

Souness has now called on Rangers fans to back the team instead of criticise as he warned the outrage will only benefit Celtic.

On talkSPORT, Souness said: "I've been in Glasgow, I've worked there for five years. I know how it works.

"You lose an Old Firm game then everything is wrong.

"I would plead with the Rangers fans right now who turned up at Ibrox and were critical of their manager and their team to take a deep breath and calm down.

"That only benefits one team and that will only benefit Celtic.

"Get behind your manager and your football club."
