NEW DELHI: Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar has broken cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's 14-year-old record during the second ODI match against New Zealand in Nelson on Wednesday.
Soumya's outstanding innings of 169 runs from 151 balls, featuring 22 fours and 2 sixes, surpassed Tendulkar's milestone for the highest runs in ODIs by a player from the subcontinent in New Zealand.
Tendulkar's record, set in 2009 with an unbeaten 163-run knock against the Kiwis in Christchurch, has now been eclipsed by Sarkar's remarkable performance. Additionally, Soumya's innings marked the highest run scored by a Bangladesh cricketer in an away ground in the ODI format.
In the second ODI, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field at Saxton Oval. Sarkar's stellar knock was the standout contribution, with no other Bangladeshi player crossing the 50-run mark. Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim's crucial innings of 45 from 57 balls supported the team in reaching a total of 291 runs.
In the response, New Zealand's openers set the tone with a quick start, reaching 76/1 after ten overs. Despite Bangladesh debutant Rishad Hossain's impressive catch to dismiss Rachin Ravindra for 45, New Zealand's batters continued to dominate.
Will Young, who scored 105 in the first ODI, contributed significantly with 89, forming a lucrative second-wicket partnership of 129 runs with Nicholls. After Nicholls' dismissal, Tom Latham and Tom Blundell guided the team to victory, with Blundell sealing the win with a six in the 46th over.
